Default Off topic: update on football qb grandson

A year or so ago some of you were following our oldest grandson's (now 23) high school and college football career. Here is an update.

After graduating from the Univ of Hawaii in May 2013 he got a job in Hawaii as a mortgage broker and stayed there. In addition to his day job as a mortgage broker, he also was hired by a high school in/near Honolulu to be their qb coach. He coached their 2013 season and did well. He did not give up his football dreams.

A week ago he flew to Germany and signed to play for the German Football League. He went to Cologne to play as qb for the Cologne team and also to be a qb coach. Last weekend -- after being there for only 4 days with the team -- they played their first game. As qb he scored 3 TDS and rushed 100 yds. They won 50-20.

He speaks and understands no German so living in Germany for almost 3 mo. is going to be an interesting experience for him. So far he is loving it and happy to be continuing with football. He'll be back sometime in Sept. and will return to Hawaii to be the qb coach for the Hawaii high school. He will also get his mortgage broker job back.

    Proud grandma,
    Helen

    Helen,

Is your other Grandson still playing for the Air Force Academy?

No. He decided that the military was not for him. He had the option to quit the Academy after 1-1/2 years there and took it. He transferred to Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo, CA) in January 2013 as quarterback on scholarship and played as qb the 2013 season. He is still at Cal Poly as a qb on scholarship and loves it. He is a homebody with an extensive family of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins most living near each other in Folsom, CA. Dano comes home on weekends quite frequently and every holiday to be with family and friends. He could not do that in Colorado at the academy. Family and friends can drive to his Cal Poly games. That is very important to him and his family. Giving up the Air Force Academy, its scholarship, and being a qb for them plus a great future it offered was a difficult decision to make, but he gave it 1-1/2 years and decided he wanted to go to a college in CA. Cal Poly wanted him and offered a scholarship. It is both of his parents alma mater. His dad played football for Cal Poly on a scholarship.

We have no idea what he will decide to do after he graduates from Cal Poly. He may also decide to pursue his football dreams and go play with the Canadian Football League or the German Football League. He is too small (5'10") to play for the American NFL.

    Helen,

Glad to hear he is still playing, in school, and happy! It's a tough and demanding game and the grind can really get to you. I completely understand the need and want of having family and friends close by. I hope both your grandsons have a great season this year.

    All the best!

The Graves grandsons may be height challenged but they make up for it in HEART. That is awesome news about David what happened to the GF in Hawaii did she get to make the traveling squad to Germany or must she worry about a Heidi Klum type as competition
Sounds as if Dano has his priorities straight too

The GF in Hawaii has no worries about a Heidi Klum type. Have you seen pictures of her? She is gorgeous, but more importantly has a good heart and the same traditional values as David. They are on the same page of life. It will be only be about a 2-1/2 mo. separation. I think their relationship can endure that.
