Basketball is a game of intelligence which would make it something beyond your understanding, but as far as being sissified,
I don't think those pro's that set the high post screens would agree with that. As for "Fag Tag", it offers something for those
    not very athletic to do.

Also, our times were all hand clocked.

I ran the mile relay as well.
We set a state record in our heat my SR season, but we ended up 3rd in the state meet as 2 other teams bested our record.
So it only lasted about an hour...........
Took 5th in the open 440.

I also ran the 330 yard Int Hurdles on occasion and the 120 HH's and I High Jumped.
My best in competition was 6'4'.
I could hit 6'6' in practice, but never got it done in an event.

In my day, we could play 4 sports, which I did.
In St Louis indoor and outdoor track started early, baseball later.
As the football coach was the track coach, all the players ran track as well!!

But trust me, a lot of stuff happened in the 60's and 70's that don't happen now!!!!

Dang Stan, I wouldn't have even been eating your dust, it would have been settled already. I just looked up the National High School quarter mile record, it was 45.8. That's FAST! I ran the half mile, quarter mile, and mile relay. I don't remember my best half mile time but it was just under 2 minutes. One day after I placed second in the half, second in the quarter, and won the mile relay I threw up. All my coach could say was, Bezesky - you're out of shape. We'll have to work on that... Nice guy! My football coach was also the track coach. He pretty much required that if you wanted to play football you had to do three sports. I did football, wrestling, and track. I started out as a distance runner and never did a thing until I begged him to let me try middle distance. He said I wasn't suited for it, but let me give it a shot. Then I started placing. Go figure...

    Nice work Buzz!

I ran the quarter as a sprint.
    (or tried)
    Wide open start to finish.
    (puked more than once)
There was an Olympian back then that began the quarter as a borderline sprint.
    So that's what we did.

There was a guy from Kirkwood HS in St Louis named Chester Jackson, same class ('70).
He was busting 46 or so.
He did end up in the Olympics years later.

BTW---That was my best recorded time, was more consistently in the 50's or so.
You consider wind, hand times etc, who knows??????

Fag tag, really??? That's pretty classless. Let me ask you this. How many times in a bball game do you see someone push another guy's face into the floor, bend his body that it shouldn't be bent and get away with it without having a foul called? That is the norm in Wrestling. You think wrestlers are not athletic? Now who's intelligence, or lack there of is showing? Wrestlers are some of the best conditioned, well trained athletes on the planet.

P.S. I can assure you there were many more of the "hot chicks" at our wrestling meets, as opposed to the BBall games. the reason being, everyone loves a winner. Our basketball team were perpetual losers. If you want fans in the stands, you gotta win. We took 5 of us from the wrestling team and played a scrimmage against the basketball starters, and beat them at their own game. They wouldn't come to our world for a wrestling match though.

I believe you set the tone for classless remarks. The weightclass system allows many nonathletic kids to compete and win. 106# class really, how much competition did you just eliminate 98%? My neighbor was State champ 98# his senior year, anorexia was his greatest training tool.

Leave it up to Roger Goodell and he'll eliminate tackling from the NFL!

Kickball will be the new contact sport.

My best friend weighed 86 pounds and won 2 state titles at 105. If your neighbor was anorexic, it was attributed to 2 things. Parents that didn't care and a coach that wasn't looking out for his well being. Our coach did a bmi index on each one of us before the season started. He would only let us cut a safe amount of weight. A nutritionist volunteered her services, and developed a meal plan for each of us to allow us to safely cut weight. We had 2 hour mandatory study nights 3 nights a week at coach's house. He made us carry a 3.0 minimum GPA to compete on the team. The majority of our team were 3 sport letter winners. Very athletic bunch, we were.

really glad to see I have track and field in common with a couple of you.I was too slow to be a sprinter and didnt like running distance events. But I did get to run a couple of legs of 220 yds on the relay team and was also a long jumper..I was also in very good shape for tennis season and it helped with my fitness on the court

always enjoy watching a good track meet, my favorites were Edwin Moses and Bob Seagren
