Question just wondering why more young dogs are not being entered

I have an upcoming judge's assignment that seems to be kinda small in the Junior and Senior entries. I feel bad for a club because it costs them room and gas and meals regardless of the number of entries. I know all who have Master dogs are trying to qualify for the MN in SC next year but let's support the lower stakes as well....If the entries remain small I can guarantee that all who are entered will have a good time....To me good dog work and FUN is what these games are all about along with getting new people involved.
My Dad said to me ."Son, a man just needs three things to be happy....A good dog, a good gun and a good wife.....Thank God I have all three

Maybe dogs are not ready. Gas and other expenses. Combine the two and some would wait. JMO

It isn't worth it to run Junior or Senior.
It is worth it to run Started (two times anyway) and Seasoned.

If the AKC wants more entries in Junior and Senior, they need to change the system so that you actually get something worth getting from running the lower levels.

Raise the standard and button down the judging. Make it mean something to achieve.

Most experienced dog people don't value the lower stakes..... people aren't going to pay a pro to handle in lowered stakes..... low numbers in lower stakes represents a lack of new ametures entering the game.... blame it on anything you want but that is commotion across the board in retriever games and represents the growing problem of too few matures in the game.

You need to pass 4 Junior/4 Senior, or 5 Senior tests, in order to get one pass knocked off of Master. And you only get ONE pass knocked off.

If you pass 2 started/3 Seasoned, or 4 Seasoned tests, you get three Finished passes knocked off of an HRCH.

    Do the math.
It doesn't make sense to run the lower levels in AKC.

I still enjoy running the lower stakes. I can't recreate the excitement that is produced at tests. The time in the blind is used as training. I use the time from the blind to the line to reinforce heeling. Sure, no corrections but praise and reinforcement. Those lower levels teach me about what my dogs will do under pressure and teach me to slow down with each dog.

That being said I consider the following before entering junior:

-Is force fetch done? My first dog wasn't force fetched. Though we went 4 for 4, I'll never do that again!!

-Orthopedics: I have a really hard time running a dog under a year or intensive training in that time period. I know lots do it but I want to see those dogs at 10 or 11 years of age. I want a dog active at least to that age and relatively pain free. Elbow in particular are a big concern.

-Money. I'm ok now, but in the future that may limit what I can do. If that gets to be the case I may have to skip out on something like the lower stakes.

-on the flip side, with the way it's been getting into master, I may only go to senior. Senior tells me a lot anyway and I am able to train myself to that level. I can't do master on my own. And the entry fees for master are getting up there. $95. These fee raises are needed to cover costs, I'm not complaining about that at all. My budget will just be able to handle fewer tests.

Just my views. I'll be competing in the lower levels for a while! Now I just need a lower level dog!!!

I think with the tight economy, people have to be more discriminating about where they spend their money. I'd be curious to know if the FT community has seen a dip in minor stakes entries.
