    Default Therapy Puppy

Well, the new pup has settled in quickly. One of Pounce's "responsibilities" is to become a therapy puppy for our 4+ year old autistic Granddaughter.

This morning the three of us went to an ideal spot. A regularly mowed, long erosion strip in a 60 acre bean field provided natural barriers to eliminate the bolting tendencies of autism. Lylah and Pounce have "hit it off well" right from the start.

The coolest things was watching Lylah "solve" the puppy biting issue. Within one day Lylah was only presenting the upraised palms of her hands. This served to form a barrier the pup couldn't get a hold of. She could simply and gently fend the pup off. It was so simple, I never thought of doing that before.

Here's a few unique retriever training puppy photos with her "buddy". Pounce was ready for a long nap when we came home....Lylah not so much.

If you need information on trianing the pup for therapy, contact Retriever Freedom. I am sure they can give any help needed. They train dogs for the that reason.

Don't have one I am training, I am just very interested in training labs for different jobs. Thank you for the information.

I have seen a Lab trained to supervise an autistic child in his own back yard. The dog would "herd" the child back towards the house if he started to leave the play area of the yard. It was fantastic to watch their interaction. Good luck with both the youngsters in your life. Two beautiful girls

Love this thread. Never trained a therapy dog, but once we had a "real pretty" lab who had zero retrieving potential; gave her to my nephew. Later they found out his wife had epilepsy and the dog can sense the seizures long before Laura can. So, Sadie would go and lay a paw on Laura and she'd know to take her meds. Made a true believer out of me.

Great pictures of today's adventure. It looks like they will bond well and probably tire each other out! Glad to see you enjoying them both together.
