Default Dog works great on lead but not off of it

I have an 11 month old male chocolate lab who is working great while I have a 30ft lead on him. As soon as I take the lead off he quits listening and responding to commands. Can anyone help me out with a solution to this problem?

    Thanks,
    Nick

ecollar........but dont just throw one on the dog. You need to condition the dog to the collar. Buy yourself a collar condition dvd along with the collar. Smartworks has one, as does Lardy through YBS mdeia. See the banner at the top for Lardy material.

A friend recommended the Tritronics retriever training book, so I am ordering that one. I'm worried he will become collar wise and do the same thing when the e-collar isn't on him... Is this something I shouldn't be worried about?

The dog needs basic obedience first!

Yes, of course it does. I guess I kinda assumed the obvious.

He listens to every command I give (sit, stay, heel) until the lead comes off.

So when he's off lead and you say sit or here and he doesn't, what do you do?

Even if you haven't collar conditioned the dog make sure he has one on at all times. Don't turn it on, but let him wear it around during all training and this will help keep him from becoming collar wise once you go through CC.

I try to enforce the command, which is hard to do when he runs off. This is my first time training one by myself and I haven't had this issue when working my Dad's labs in the past.

Thanks everyone for all the post so far. Keep them coming for the new guy.
