17 vets and now 17 knowledgeable retriever folk have all said the same thing; what does it take for you to change your mind?

Had a friend who had an Oops breeding and her vet did give the mismate shot. It messed her maiden bitch up re coming in season and getting pregnant for a year or two and when she finally had a litter, she had to be spayed. I wouldn't use it.

Have the pups. Its the best solution. If nature hadn't designed girls to have puppies at that age, she wouldn't have her first heat that young. It is far from ideal, but its far better than the other options.

That may be rude but, how would be putting a eighth month to year old bitch together with a male in the same run together ever be a good idea? If they tied, then that bitch was in heat for a few days, and as a breeder you should have picked up on that and known better! I'm not trying to be rude, but you should have known better!

That said, let her have that first litter and give them away, generally the first litter is the smallest and there is no such thing as a "therapeutic abortion"!

If you don't want the pups get her spayed and give away as a family dog. Live and learn! Next time don't be so naive.

A mismate shot is different than aborting the litter at 28 days, but you have to know when exactly the tie occurred. No vets that I know of will give a mismate shot anymore because of the risks. There are vets that I know of that will therapeutically abort at 28 days without a spay. If you were in Wisconsin, I would put you in touch with one. ANd, that is OK on the bitch. But, it's still safer to have the litter and find them homes.

And, don't let anyone fool you - big name breeders have had Oops breedings. There is a chance because of her age, and being her first cycle, that she did not ovulate.

Its not been said, but another option is to let her whelp the litter, and have them euthanized at birth. Not politically correct but still an option.....

I would think that would be pretty hard on the mom-she already had them, let her learn what to do next instead of having the pups just disappear.

Let her have them and give them away. They will still make good pets. A good lesson and then you are prepared for the next time.
