I was thinking about riding down to Cheraw this coming weekend to watch the derby and open. High of 27 low of 12 thursday and not much different friday. Will they still run and if yes what happenes when ponds are froze over?
Adam, Mark and I were planning on coming down. The long range (at the time) forecast, did not look favorable, so we decided to stay put. With a foot of snow predicted and temps of -15 (here) this week, it is looking as if it might go down as one of our smarter decisions!
We ran an informal trial yesterday at CMRC. High temp according to my truck thermometer was 5, -2 when we started, with a steady 12 mph wind. 51 dogs entered. No problems. I threw birds for the 13 dogs in the Hunter group. Gear up, thermos of hot coffee and run the truck from time to time.
Entries are on the low side, and I am sure there were a few that were thinking things would warm up more before the trial that might bail if things are bad. Good bunch of dogs. Really tough derby crowd, though.
A water series with hard water will be interesting! Can this trial even happen with no open water? I would guess it would be canceled/postponed but I'm just getting ready to run my first FT in a month or so I don't know much about a FT and weather situations.
Heading down to Cooper-Black in 2 weeks with a training buddy. We will train at Cooper and also at Camden most of the month. I usually go down in Feb. Glad I moved it back but looks like I could have moved it back into April. Hope the Ice is gone.I also hope that the trial this week goes as well as expected. Hey Greg are you running the dog this weekend?
Hey Eric, long time no see, the way the weather looks around here you might want to push it back to May!!!
Jason, is running Tinker this weekend. I am running Reese in Americus this weekend. We all will be in Americus next weekend
for Tall Pines and Southwest Ga. Hope it warms up.
Just an FYI on hard water. We traveled south from Chicago to TX via Little Rock over the weekend. Temps were Hi of 11 degrees all day. Water in most ponds south of the St Louis/ Indianapolis line was mostly wide open. Cold I am sure but open. I see no reason for SC waters to be closed up tight and will be interested to see the reports. Good Luck! Have FUN!
I live 2 hrs away and we have the same weather right now and all of the small water is locked up here. Wed,thrus and Friday will have single digit lows and highs not above 25.
If the current forecast holds, should be plenty of water on top when the torrential rains hit Saturday. Even if not, the rulebook says they should be tested on land and water, but doesn't specify the phase the water must be in. Could be really quick last series if they can just run across the water, but the whistle stops on the water blinds might be a little sloppy
I entered a dog in the derby .. she weighs about 38lbs... If the ponds are frozen I better bring her ice skates Good luck all ! PLEASE remember to dry your dogs good and bring bedding for dog boxes etc...
