Im doing an 8th grade math assignment on a dream job (pro dog trainer) and I need the employment outlook for pros. Couldn't find much. Any help is appreciated. Thanks- Jacob
Jacob, don't know about pros, but I would venture that the employment outlook for 8th grade birdboys in Colorado is rather ripe with opportunity. That could make you almost an assistant to a pro, flight engineer so to speak. Have you connected yet with any of those opportunities in exchange for helping train your Boykin?
Jacob has been coming over to my place every evening I have been available, I'm NOT a Pro and there really aren't that many opportunities here in the Colorado Springs area for working with a Pro, at least not ones I'd recommend, let alone subject poor Jacob and his adorable Remi to!
I will say in the few weeks we have been working together his little girl has greatly improved, the first night I questioned myself...."what was I thinking?" But last night was just fabulous! I was so excited for them....is she ready to enter the Grand, nope, but she shows intelligence (maybe a little too much ) and there is the desire, we just have to focus it and then grow it....so far, so good!
You should research Retriever News for # of dogs entered per year in hunt tests and field trials, the search the AKC for numbers of registered labs, goldens, and other retrievers. Look up the growth of training and pet businesses, and make assumptions from that. (Go to a company like PetSmart's website and look under "Investors" for the really good data; they'll brag about their growth there). You could use the number of PRTA members to establish a ratio of trainers to dogs, then and chart the growth of the sport; extrapolate from there.
Look at the recent increase in the number of (supposedly) professional pet dog trainers and growth of dog ownership to come up with a projection. Retrievers is a tiny sliver.
I'm sure Animal Behavior college or one of those other online schools has information also.
If it's a Math assignment Jacob ,then I'm sure the percentages will be varied between the 'wanna be's' and the 'have done's' . Which makes it more complex when you add in the factor of the 'Think they are' or 'Just dream about it'.
The maths is sound though , but the data is 'questionable' http://www.marshu.com/articles/calc...ce-between-percent-percentages-calculator.php
I don't get it...Is this for real....If you are really a Math teacher create an excel spread sheet with costs across the top w flexible and static numbers like Feed, Labor, Vet exp, Birds, Land Rent, Vehicle PYMT, Depreciation (equip etc) and dogs with income and those with no income (personal), add in boarding.....I have to go feed....but as a teacher who cares about the long term outlook for PROs....things change daily....I can tell you that 2 years ago my kennel had 50% OIL FIELD clients, today 5%....go figure that math
Good luck in your math class young man and best of luck training your pup. You two will build a great friendship and partnership on this training journey.
Edit:
Just found a better one. Typed in animal trainer and got better data. It is not dog specific but should work for your assignment. http://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes392011.htm
Terry, Jacob's an 8th grader doing the assignment, not assigning homework. Lainee, thanks for giving him a passing grade with pretty near flying colors for his training efforts - echoing Jim to say thanks for the "report card" on Jacob.
Taking young ones under your shoulder i.e. Mentoring is a great and enjoyable albeit sometimes frustrating task. But if we want our sports to continue more people need to do it.
This is how I got into the game, a man named Roman Echols- I curse him daily but it has been an enjoyable ride and great hobby.
I appreciate everyones help. I have to make a powerpoint on being a Pro trainer and the math involved. Thanks for the help everyone I really appreciate it. Also I really messed my dog up and Lainee is really guiding me on training but also making the HRCH a little more visible.
Your gonna mess up!!!!Everyone does!!!It's how we as humans learn...good luck and when your pup is acting up ,just think what your parents and teachers went thru with you!!!Jim
First of all Jacob did not screw his dog up! She's a nice dog, he doesn't know what he doesn't know, none of us did when we first started. Second, Jacob is a great example of a young adult who sets a goal for himself and is working toward it, without expecting a participation ribbon! It's a joy to work with him, he asks smart questions, learns quickly and is doing what's best for his girl! Can't ask for much more, I hope someday to congratulate him for getting his HRCH!
Jacob I apologize, I mis read your post...Never thought we'd have a 13 YO on this site, thought you were a teacher...that being said I would gladly share whatever info you need just email or PM and I'll give you all the dirty stuff you'll need to complete your project including pics....sorry I am dyslexic.
I love dogs and kids ....the rest of you can ....
