I recently used United with no complaints. As others said, biggest thing I found in research is get a direct flight so a slight delay of flight does not turn into a multi day ordeal.
If you use a booking service, flights are as cheap or cheaper than ground transport and the dog arrives much faster. I recently received a 90lb dog for $330 by Delta. Flying is my preference for puppies so they don't spend time riding around the country on their way to their destination as the other dogs on board are delivered. For flying, you need a crate and a health certificate dated within 10 days of the flight.
I have successfully used Sonshine Pets (PetEx) to book flights.
Roughly how much would it cost to move a 65 pound dog from Atlanta to Seattle by ground? I know these would be very rough but I'm just starting to investigate shipping cost for a rescue dog that is here. He's very big and quite strong so I hesitate putting him in the hands of a know-nothing baggage handler. Ground would take longer but would be with an experienced dog person.
Just find a direct flight and call the airline, Delta was great a couple others have good pet policies. They stage them walk them before they load etc. There are crate size rules so best to call. Also with Delta you pick up in the freight section and I had to pay with cash no cards or checks for the full price...
Perhaps I wasn't clear. I know how to get an estimate for airline shipping. What would be a good enough estimate for me to even start considering ground travel.
The price for ground service depends on the distance, how many other deliveries they have along the route, etc. So there is no set price. You would need to contact the companies to check their availability and what the price would be for your timeframe.
