    Default DIABETES INSIPIDUS

HAVE DISCOVERED MY DOG HAS DIABETES INSIPIDUS. OR DI (NICKNAME) THIS IS A DISORDER OF WATER BALANCE. THE DOG IS UNABLE TO CONCENTRATE URINE, THERE ARE TWO TYPES. CENTRAL AND NEPHROGENIC. WHAT THIS BOILS DOWN TO IS YOUR DOG PEES A LOT AND DRINKS ALOT. YOU CAN PROBABLY GET A BETTER UNDERSTANDING BY LOOKING THIS UP ON WEB.

QUESTION THAT I'M THROWING OUT HERE, IS THE VETS PRESCRIBE NASAL OR EYE DROPS, BUT I BELIEVE PILL CAN BE JUST AS EFFECTIVE, BUT CAN'T GET IT THROUGH VET MED SUPPLY. THE MED IS DESMOPRESSIN OR DDAVP. DOES ANYONE OUT THERE HAVE THIS PROBLEM. C. WILLETT

good luck with your dogs.It canhappen in people also but IT IS GENETIC in humans.Women are the carriers and only pass it down and you can have it or be a carrier. My wife carries the gene but luckily my sons are not affected.Currently in humans there is not real test other then just lab work to check your lytes.

THE VET DID A DEPRIVATION TEST ON HIM AND THEN TESTED HIM EVERY HALF HOUR TO A HOUR, CHECKING HIS WEIGHT AND URINE VOLUME AND CONCENTRATION. THROUGH THE PROCESS HE LOST OVER 4 LBS. ALSO DID ALL THE LAB WORK TOO. THIS IS A REALLY NICE DOG WITH A WONDERFUL WATER ATTITUDE, HE MEANS ALOT TO ME.

In people it is rarely inherited. The vast majority of DI inpeople results from head injury, brain surgery or pituitary tumors.

Make sure your dog is evaluated by a Veterinary Internal Medicine specialist and follow his recommdations.

See we were told by the CDC and the specialist that is is way more prevelant than what people thing and were told it was genetic.we were never told about it being from a trauma or tumor but that is interesting.MY wife has one uncle and 2 cousins that have it.
