    The latest update ...

There have been two meetings between the two sides which were not making progress. Another was scheduled for today. Then we got word that the meeting had been cancelled. Instead there was to be one person from each side and a mediator. Our participant was named and went to the meeting.

The meeting has just broken up. Instead of the format agreed upon, the ARs brought perhaps 30 people, all were allowed to express their opinions. We can but hope that the Chair of the committee will see through the tactics and convene another meeting. It really shows the sad lack of honor and honesty on that side.

Well, another fast one has been pulled. This morning I got a revised copy of the proposed statute along with a notice of a public hearing tomorrow at 8:45 AM. Then, this afternoon yet another revision came in. This may have a flaw it it and we'll try to point that out tomorrow. That will potentially cause a few days delay. As it stands, this may be the most restrictive anti-breeding statute in the country. To sell a single puppy you will need to get a registration number ... all the way up to 35. Above 35 puppies and you'll need to be licensed and to submit to annual inspections.

Whew! What was to be a "public hearing" turned out to be nothing but a committee meeting ... 3 bills covered in 15 minutes. The bill we were concerned about lost 2 - 5 (I think). The objections weren't even the ones that I'd thought of so those can be kept in the pocket. What the objections were:

    1. There was no appeal process for any problems with an inspection.

    2. There was inadequate language for a failed inspection. The bill would have allowed a note stuck in a doorjamb and at the end of 10 days, fines.

    3. Couldn't the Dept of Ag and Industries do this rather than a separate Commission?

    4. What is the protection for livestock farmers that this won't get slipped in the door at them without requiring the legislative process? (Very big deal.)

There were about 5 other issues that I couldn't hear because of multiple conversations near the microphone.

As far as I can tell this one is dead in the Senate. We still have the house version to worry about. From the talk of the committee, the calls and emails were very much noticed.

    Thanks to all.

Glad to hear it! Does Alabama have a referendum system for initiating statutes. Very much abused by people like this.

Your saga reminds me of the Bloomberg Everytown USA initiatives. One was passed here (typical gun ownership restrictions... "common sense" blah, blah) It passed narrowly in spite of bazillions of dollars put into the state. Our Atty General slapped it down and nullified it because it was so poorly written, poorly thought out. Unenforceable and inconsistent with the regulatory apparatus and funding systems of our state.

Way to stand in the gap.

    No referendum process.

If we can believe the pages put out by the Humane Society, it's over for this year but they will be back.

    Thanks to all who helped.

Out here we got PETA going after the Shriners , now and their use of animals (dogs) in their circus. In the 1990s PETA eliminated greyhound racing, beaver trapping w/leg traps, spring bear treeing (NO killing) and etc. These organizations are in competition for money with each other. See who comes after the dog/shooting sports.
