New here and want to learn
Hi, Im new here and I want to learn field trials, I haven't ever been to one. What are the different categories you can run the dog in? I have heard the term, Derby, Open, Ametuer but I have no clue what any of them mean. And what is required of the dog in each one? If you could fill me in that would be most helpful.
Derby = dogs under two years of age
Qualifyer = If your dog becomes Qualified All Age you can enter the restricted stakes
Amateur = No professionals
Open= eveyone can run(only the best dogs should enter)

Can dogs under two run in the qualifier? And what is that like? And if you pass the qualifier your dog becomes QAA? How much different is the qualifier than and AKC MH test?
And once the dog is QAA he can run in the Ametuer and Open? How many points does it take to get the FC and AFC titles?
Its a lot of questions I know. But Im really trying to figure it out.
Doubles on land, then on water
Distances from 120 - 300yds
Go to a trial or two and observe.
If you think your dog is ready, ask to be test dog first.

Tell us what part of the world you are in and I bet we can tell you about a retriever club in your neck of the woods. Then these folk can give you a demonstration and help evaluate your dogs level of work. And steer you to a trial for you to see.

There are no restrictions other than being old enough, to run a qualifier.
There are only placements 1,2,3,4,RJ, and Jams
Dogs finishing 1st & 2nd would be QAA
What is usually involved in a Qualifier? Is it relatively open fields or water. Are there poision birds, diversions? What's required at the line.....what happens if dog creeps or has a controlled break? Newbie here and wanted some information. I will be attending some events in the future.
