Why does water matter????

I have been working with a young dog and lets say his drive is not up to par. He gets in a hurry to do nothing. But for the last two days I have been doing a few water retrieves before land work and his drive is wide open. Now today I started land work and it was the same slow go dog, so I went to the water and we run a few short marks then returned to the land work and he was wide open again. Can anyone make me understand why the water seems to turn him on like a switch. Dogs have a funny way of seeing things and this is one of those times.

I don't know exactly why, but I have had a number of dogs where the switch goes on when they first start in the water. Don't worry about it, just enjoy

I know my old man picks it up on water because some of the places I train on land has cactus and he has stepped on a few in his lifetime, so if he is any where he "thinks" there might be cactus he goes slow.....so maybe something on land has spooked the dog???

I know I like whatever it is that makes him hit that turbo boost when he does water work. I think for the next week or so I'm going to stop by the water before I go to the land. I've got to keep this going for a while its like having a new dog.
