    Default New challenge

I just received a call from a guy that wants me to train his German Wire Hair. It has a really good breeding and I am excited for the challenge, but I have a feeling that it is going to be a totally different game once I'm past OB training. I have the manual launchers but what else do I need? Any help would be great.

Does he want you to do "Pointing Dog Training" ?
If so, you want to do all your "Whoa" work, before you get into your retrieving work.
A couple box launchers and some Upland birds come in handy.

Yes. The owner is actually a big game guide hunter that bought the pup when he was too busy to do anything with him. I have five manual box launchers. More pigeons would be nice.

If you are using pigeons you don't need a box launcher - put the pigeons to "sleep" and let the dog point a planted bird vs. responding to a box launcher....just saying.

I'll try and find the article that tells how to sleep a pigeon.....works great

Lots and lots and lots of birds!! Depending on the age and pointing ability a check cord to bring the dog in to the scent cone, A friend of mine uses a 10 ft pvc pole with a eyelet on the top and 30 ft of cord and the bird on the end! So when the dog goes on point you can have somebody go up and move the bird and keep the dog steady if the bird moves, The bird will fly around and right over the dog shooting blanks and keeping the dog on whoa!

To put a bird to sleep!! Put the head of the pigeon under its wing put it on the ground with one hand and pull its feet straight out hold for about 10 to 15 seconds! and the bird is ther for about 10 minutes!!
