In the 1930s and 1940s I am sure it wasn’t give a second thought...prolly very well accepted in that era. Less concerning when you consider the time period…history is what it is

Patrick is right and the field dogs wasn't the only venue that were politically incorrect. There was a bench CH the Goose Hunter's Nigger Boy and in the field was the 1938 winner of the Field and Stream trophy Nigger of Barrington. Before 1941 the winner of the trophy was the unofficial National Champion. More recently a national winners gundog was called, Ghetto.

Absolutely correct. On the other hand, back in the 1970s when I was showing and field trialing German shorthairs, I knew a guy with a solid liver shorthair named "Spade." Thank God we are past those days. (of course, nowadays, I know a guy whose Chessie's call name is Turd. Good grief.

Maybe I am naive, but I would have just guessed spade to have been referring to the suit of card not the slur.

my old state legislator Ken Cory from calif. used to have a FC named Rodney's ML Coon( as in martin luther) and Ken,(god rest his soul) was from a very conservative district in So Cal. Ken rose to the office of the state contoller and was once a gubernatorial candidate. he was a very effective legislator and a darn nice guy.
