    Default Legal or Not?

I've seen this twice in the past year what are your thoughts.

First and second series of derby (land) are run from the same line. First series is a single. Once the dog returns with the duck they are set up for a double. All three guns are visable from the line. During series 1 the other two gunners do not retire. During series 2 the single does not retire.

First time I seen this the tests were scrapped at the end of the day. Started fresh the next day. Judges said that it was brought to their attention that this setup was illegal. Seen it again recently. Voiced my concerns and was told that nothing was wrong with the setup and we proceeded.

    What are your thoughts judges/handlers

Not sure if it is legal or not, but seems very lazy of the judges. I know you cannot add holding blinds to ad confusion, so I also would believe you could not simply have a thrower out that is not involved in either series.

Beyond not being lazy also is not fair as adds confusion to the young dogs.

Would put those judges under the "don't waste my money there again"

Next time request to speak to a member of the Field Trial Committee.

I have thrown for a similar set-up. Two gunners retired behind blinds while dogs pick up a single flyer. While dogs return with the single flyer, the two hidden gunners come out and throw a stand out double. Flyer station visible while the dogs pick up the double.

Doesn't take but a minute to put out a couple blinds.

Don't know if it's illegal but it sounds like a typical training set-up to me.

seems to me that derby dogs should be (and probably are) used to multiple gun stations...esp if they are running W drills or singles off multiple stations....

don't know if it is legal or not...

The problem with set ups like this, where guns are visible but do not throw, is that dogs may no-go waiting for the other birds to be thrown. Once ran a set-up where all 3 guns were out, run single, then double. Several dogs no-goed on the single, thinking it was to be a triple. mine included. Not sure about illegal, but does fall under the definition of stupid.

The problem I see is that it is possible for a young dog to switch to one of the stations that isn't a part of that "series".

That too, it would be nice to separate derby dogs by marking, not confusion.

I see it as more of a head swinging problem distracting the dog from clearly focusing on the marks under judgement.

From the rule book, "No Dry Guns should be stationed in the field and visible to the dog while a marking test is run, or while the marking portion of a combination mark / blind test is run."
