How's this for simplifying training? How many thoughts can a dog have at one time?

Field trial labradors, the wind beneath my wings,
sometimes poop under my boots.
Hmmm I would have to say it depends on the breed and the dog. Some are more single minded while others seem to be more into muti tasking.

I'm just happy when my dog maintains the one thought I want him to for as long as I want him to. He's pretty good. My wife would say I don't stay on track long enough for the dog to figure out what I want!

I have worked with dogs who I would have been delighted if they could have maintained even a single thought in their mind...seemed like only a partial thought at best.

Interesting Aussie! I'd guess one thought, but any number of "variations" of that thought within the circumstances be it via learned response, genetic, temperament or drive...
Depends on the dog I'd say. I had one that I could show a concept just a few times and he would do it. I could work on multiple things in a training session with him and he got it. My current pride and joy I have to focus on one thing in a session and keep hammering away at it for multiple sessions before moving on to another concept. Then I hope she remembers it in the heat of a test or trial. You know, difficult stuff like SIT! at the line and HEEL - dammit!
I think they were all made to shoot because if they were not why did they give them that whirr of wings that moves you suddenly more than any love of country . . . I think that they were made to shoot and some of us were made to shoot them and if that is not so well, never say we did not tell you that we liked it.

I would say it is one thought at a time but with the ability to switch to another one thought in an instant.
With my young dog it goes like this-
"DUCKS! I need ducks. Who has the ducks? Ducks, Ducks, Ducks. You want me through that ditch? are there ducks? I'm gone, ducks, ducks"
Crunch........
"Food? You have food? What is it? who has it? Food, food, food....."
"Guns Ready!" "DUCKS!!!!!!!!" but I have food "Who cares I'm gonna get ducks.Ducks, ducks, ducks!!
