So yesterday we get a bunch of live pheasants to take training for flyers. Get to grounds, I set up the series, and get set to hike the bumpers out for the blinds, and want to take my 6 mo old JRT with me.(topic of my small e collar question last week!
But we see,he is preoccupied with the bird box, staring in and cocking head, and such....
I go out to set blinds and hear several shots-assuming that my partners let some birds out and were killing escapees.
I come back, they tell me, "Cutter" opened the box and the birds were getting away. So we're chuckling about that and Nicole has tracked down the last escapee with her old dog(he had a great day., and we discover the JRT Cutter, is gone! Knowing hes not gunshy, know he didnt bolt away but wondering if he chased an escapee,or something. So we patrol the whole property on foot and one in car, looking for him, for AN HOUR! No terrier... By this time Im' pretty Pi$$ed and am threatening if he is found they can KEEP him. Serve him right for taking off- So we go about trying to start work with the big dogs, and I hear a little peep. Sounded like him but he was nowhere. Wondering where, we listen more, and I decide to just go and LOOK. HE IS IN THE BIRD BOX WITH THE PHEASANTS!!!! I go to fish him out and hes sitting on the pheasants, looking very wide eyed, and the pheasants are looking the same. I nearly died laughing and just about needed a change of shorts while I was at it! Too funny- no casualties except one perhaps died of fright? The rest of the day we were saying "Jack In The Box" and the little ditty that goes with that toy. Apparently my friend saw the birds getting out and she immediatly shut hte bird box, well, didnt notice he was IN IT. The rest of the training day went well, and fairly uneventful except a crippled pheasant that took a young dog all across the pond(did you know pheasants can swim? Me either.) on a 15 minute chase. Talk about persistance-she got it -it was pretty cool.
