Default Looking for Trainer in MN or Western WI

I have a specific need for bird / bumper handling.
1 yr old BLM. He has been to training but this behavior was not corrected and now may be ingrained. I want to break it but am unsure what to do. I have tried PVC ends on bumpers and repeated corrections. He has been force fetched but was allowed to handle by the rope and cigar the bumper when being trained by a pro.

Appreciate any help or referrals you can offer.

    Dave Rorem, Tom Dokken...
"You can take a puppy from a litter that has no champion lines in its pedigree and turn her/him into a Grand champion. And you can take a puppy whos relatives have every letter in the alphabet behind thier names and get a so/so hunter. You ask what you can expect out of her?. Exactly what you put in to her." - shootncast

There are a lot of good trainers to pick from in MN and Western WI. From what you've described it sounds like you may have to repeat the yard work. Are you looking to compete in retriever competitions or for a hunting dog? Rorem takes dogs that are already thru the yard, very rarely a youngster, and on their way to a competitive field trial career. Tom Dokken has a nice program as do many others in the same area. PM me with what you're needs are and I can point you to several good pros to select from.

Dave is one of the best trainers around but only handles All Age Field trial dogs. Tom Dokken hasn't trained a dog in many years.

How does the dog handle birds? I have had dogs that are somewhat sloppy with bumpers but hold birds just fine. What are your goals for the dog in the long run? It would be hard to get into a great trainer just to fix it. Most trainers want a commitment for at least a few months.

I can send the dog on a line for 150 yds or so - whistle stop and cast. It is just get his bumper handling or bird handling in check. He is sloppy with birds just like the bumpers. The dog will be used for hunting.

I'm pretty sure Tom still trains dogs, a Guy in our HRC group uses Tom for his yard and transition work. I know he used him last summer..

Ther are alot of good trainers in Mn but like stated befor it may be hard to find one just for a monthe or so to fix a problem..

Try Dave Davis. He is located in Ironwood, MI. Right across from the WI border city of Hurley. He trains all gun dogs whether it be for field trials, hunt tests or just hunting dogs. 906-362-9418
