Training Collars / Help Please

First this is a great site and I have really enjoyed reading and learning from you guys.

I am a total newbie when it comes to owning and training a retriever. I have a 10 week old BLF named Molly. I plan on attempting to train her myself with the help of a few DVD's and all the great info on the web.

I have purchased so far

I am going to go ahead and get her a collar to start wearing in the next month or so so she gets used to it. ( is that too soon for the dummy collar?)

I am looking at going with the Dogtra Collar per my research on here.

I am looking at the Dogtra 1900 NCP Field Master and also the Dogtra 3500 NCP Super X

Being that I am totally new to this and will be learning as I go which would yall suggest ?

If I were in your shoes I would give Tri Tronics a real good look. I've been using them since the late 80's. They are the most reliable units available and have great customer support. I don't have any experience with the small walkie talkie looking units, but have never had a major issue with the ones I have used, 100, 200 and 500 series. If price is an issue go to www.collarclinic.com and look at the reconditioned units they have..

i second the TT, they are worth the extra cost. but do not get the sports i have herd nothing but bad things about them. i use a pro 100 2 dog 3-4 times a day, and my dad mom and i have been using TT since 1990 ( me since 1996)
no major problems and fast customer service.

Do you think the 3500 is worth the extra 100.00 bucks vs the other cheaper model for me being entry level and all?

In all honesty, if I was getting another collar to train a young dog (basics) I would get one of the tri-tronics with the big transmitters (pro or field). You can quickly and accurately change the level of stimulation without taking your eye off of your dog (you can do this with the dogtra as well, it's just much harder to be accurate).

I'm glad I have the dogtra now as it is the better hunting collar, my dog is past basics and I have a good idea of what level of stimulation is needed to change his behavior.

btw, Jet Black on TBH. I don't post much on either site though.

edit: not sure about the extra $100 being worth it or not. I elected to spend the extra $100 so that I had it if I needed it.

I got her from my younger sister, her female had a litter and she gave me one. She has papers but not really sure what the pedigree from her parents looks like yet. I think she will be fine for hunting.

She will retrieve on land and in water for about 3 or 4 marks and then the puppy takes over and she loses interest. I am going to see what she thinks of live pigeons this weekend.
