I mainly just wanted to say hi to everyone, but I also have a quick question. I have a 6 month old black lab female and we are doing well, I think, considering this is my first duck dog I will be training on my own. My question is, is it normal for a dog of this age to go in and out of interest. At times she can be uninterested in training then an hour later she's begging me to go outside and play. She seems to be learning but it can be aggravating when I'm ready and she will not pay attention no matter what I do.

I am using the book "water dog" by Richard Wolters. I also know some people with older hunting experienced labs that I will train with too.

Welcome. Depending on maturity level of animal, it is common for a pup or young dog to lose interest. Keep sessions short and fun. Also start with a good training DVD. Evan Graham's Smartworks program is great. I also like Danny Farmer and Judy Aycocks "The Basics". Whatever you choose pick a program and have fun.

Don't put too many timelines on the animal just enjoy the ride.

    Good Luck,

    Richard

PS: Evan frequents the retriever boards so u can get some 1 on 1 coaching.
