A litter yet?
It would be cool to see you running a dog again!

That would be one lucky dawg!! Bof em!!....
I Love this CRAZY TRAGIC, Sometimes almost MAGIC, AWFUL BEAUTIFUL LIFE!!!!
Brother Chris -
No, just the Sire...but thanks for asking.
Strange twist life takes, huh, Chris. After training dogs for all those years I find myself without a dog that I would run at any level under any Judge.
Kurt-MO: My man! Long time, no hear from. Hope you and yours are doing well.

Joe, as a nearly newbie to the sport, I would enjoy hearing about your "thought processes" on selecting a litter. Would you be willing to share?

There will be a lot of mental "crap" to wade through to get to the decision point to get a dog but once I get there, the actual decision will be easy. There is no big secret process on this one. Justice Dog is running the only son of my first dog to have been given a shot at field trial work. Gavel is currently QAA and "almost there." The Pro's that have worked with him all love him and Susan has been a wonderful owner an so much more than just patient with him. So Gavel will be the Sire...but it's getting to the point of pulling the trigger that is a process.
FOM is right about me liking dogs with big ears. If I remember the story correctly, fairly recently Susan was training with Alan Pleasant for a couple of days and when she first showed up Alan took one look at Gavel and said something to the effect of "I know that dog." Susan said he his Grand Sire was Trish Jagoda's dog Petey. Alan "Yeah, but that doesn't look like Petey. That looks like Joe Stambaugh's dog, Raider. You can't forget a set of ears like that!" Raider was with Alan for three months in 1994 while I was recovering from my second bout with cancer and then Raider and I trained with him for a week prior to NAHRA Invitational in 1995. Alan has a great memory!

That is the story.... it was hard to believe that Alan Pleasant recognized the dog, but he did. "I trained a dog that looked like that years ago...."
The other thing that is nice about Gavel is his sense of humor. He wants everyone to be happy, and will create fun when there is none to be had. He will pick up the heeling stick, toss it into the air and catch it, leaping and bounding, and then take it to his trainer... He also picks up all my shoes at night, laying them in my bed around me, so I can praise him for being such a wonderful retriever... because I did this when he was little and would pick up a shoe, I'd call him to come and tell him how great he was. I had another one out of Raider who also had a sense of humor, and hated to see anyone sad.... Justice, my first lab, was also a special boy out of Raider.
So, I know that the boys had to get that wonderful personality from their old man, Raider. It's the kind of personality every lab should have (And I mean every lab, Ruckus!) And I always thank Joe for doing that last breeding with Raider that gave me the G-Man....
He's also gorgeous, and I'm not a bit biased!
