I need a new shot gun. I have been thinking about the low price over unders. Joe's had a Remington Russian made O/U for under $400. They are also selling a Mossberg, Turkish made O/U for around the same price range. The Mossberg finish looks a little nicer but, I don't care much about cosmetics.
Anyone have any opinions on these?
Otherwise, I certainly would consider buying a used O/U but, I can't find any for sale. I am not looking for high style or price. Just a hunting gun I won't feel bad about stuffing behind the seat of my truck.
Any experience with these? Comments are really appreciated. Thanks, Paul
I have a Turkish made O/U, have had it for 6 years now and use it pretty much all the time - I would recommend one. It isn't the expensive pretty one, but the ducks and pheasants don't care.....
I have heard of Stoeger's. I will look around a little. Unsually, when I start looking, I start buying.......I try not to look too hard for things I want and don't really need but, this time, need is here.
My 870 isn't ejecting shells anymore....retractors(not sure of actual name) are worn or the chamber has too much brass build up again. I have had it polished at a gunsmith twice and it seemed to cure the problem for a little while.
Otherwise, I have had it since I was 16 and I am now 34. I guess it is time for retirement.
the Russian Baikal imported by Remington are pieces of junk, they kick like a mule.the Huglu ( Turkish imported ) were being redone by De Haan out of Idaho but according to their website they no longer offer them. I have tried them and they are ok but they had a reputation of doubling ( both barrels firing simultaneously)....pick your poison...not trying to sound like a snob but when it come to an O/U pay for a good one or you may have to pay twice....and yes I do shoot an O/U for skeet...
Thanks for the link Troy. That is the same Mossberg selling at Joe's for $489. Of course, it doesn't come with the extra 20G barrels......ok, just called Joe's,
Remington SP-R 10 12G O/U $399
Mossberg (he didn't know model) $489
SPR (another Russian brand?) $489 this one looks just like the Mossberg
I have a Lanber as well. That is it leaning against the rail in my avatar. Nice gun for a very reasonable price. I got mine when they first got to the U.S. and nobody had ever heard of them. Paid $250.00 for it. The forend on mine didn't fit tight, it rsttled just a little bit, I folded up a business card and put it under the forend, snugged it right up. It has ejectors not extractors, selector for which barrel you want to shoot first, tang safety, 5 screw chokes, and a little engraving. Nobody will mistake it for a browning or bennelli, but I kill plenty of birds with it. It does look nice.
I HAD a Spartan. Bought it because it was backed by the Remington name. Not the smartest thing I've ever done. After sending it back twice for rework and still having trouble with it, I suggested to Remington that I buy up to a better unit but they didn't like the idea. I got the folks at Dicks to take it back and I bought a Franchi Diamond. Once again, not the smartest thing I've done. The Diamond was made to Dick's specs. The cheap wood is not covered under warranty. Mine checked so badly that I sent it back to the Franchi armor and we worked a deal and I bought up to a better grade of wood and had it replaced. What was originally going to be a $400 plus tax gun ended up at $800 plus tax plus shipping one way plus $32 for the wood upgrade plus the inconvenience plus it will occasionally eject an unfired shell and If I were to do it again, I wouldn't. I just wanted a clunker, but a clunker that doesn't work is worthless. To me it would be worth it to get a part time job bagging groceries for how ever long it took me to raise the funds for a Browning or Beretta or maybe a Ruger. I'm sure there are some out there shooting cheapies that will last them a lifetime and I wish I was one of them. Good luck!
I have o/u's semiauto, side by side, pumps, most fun to shoot are sxs and pumps. If you hunt waterfowl get a synthetic stock 870 pump, great gun, cheap, keeps on ticking like timex, even paddle canoe with it. Real men shoot pumps
To find just about any gun ever made for sale look on gunsamerica.comm. WRL you should look at SKB xl 900s or ithaca xl900s(own several guns from berretta to browning to remington and the ithaca/skb xl900 is one of my favorite and most reliable bang around guns i have) think they run from 300-400.00. Hope this helps!
There was a long discussion about this on one of the duck hunting forums. A lot of guys think the "Yildiz" brand of O/U are a very good gun for a reasonable price. They said that the look of the stocks vary greatly so have the person behind the counter open up all the boxes unitl you find a stock color and pattern you like. Also, I heard there are a couple of levels and it does not cost that much more to upgrade to the better level of Yildiz O/U with more featurs
btw, I heard they have a pretty good kick to them but don't all O/U from the factory without any stock retrofits have a pretty good kick?
If you can find a Lanber, buy it. I wish I had gotten a truckload of them before Michael McIntosh spilled the beans on them and you could get them for $399 for the SC model! ;-)
I'll second or third , the Lanber. As soon as I sell my sp10 I'll be buying a Lanber. Although when I go duck hunting I almost always bring my 870. Jim
I have a yildiz over-under (turkish made). It's was about $400. It's super light, and the wood to metal fit is nice. I've never had any problem with it - it shoots well. There are nicer guns, but not for 400 bucks.
Thanks, I just need to find somewhere close to Seattle which has a good selection. Haven't been to any guns shops in a long time....Thanks again, I will try and update when I have done some shopping....any ideas on shops to call are welcome...
Ummmmm. Cabelas in Lacy? Have a look at the Fausti O/u's as well. They have the same lock as my Weatherby, nice checkering excellent bluing and a really good feel about them. There is a sweetheart with English stock, single selective triggers and ejectors that is threatening to follow me home.
It's worth a trip just to put nose prints on the cabinets in the gun library. Well that and caribou sammiches.
I also have a turkish made Huglu O/U. They were imported by Armsco at the time. I just did a search and the armsco site is now gone, so I assume someone else is distributing and/or labeling them now. The fit was good and the price was right.
The Turks seem to make a pretty good shotgun but do not be fooled into believing that any of these lower priced guns are in the same calss as a Beretta or a Browning. The quality of the barrel finish is OK but not great. The quality of the choke tube fit has been terrible. If I shoot my high speed high pressure steel reloads I have one heck of a time changing tubes because they get expanded within the barrel. I would probably buy another one because the fit/price was right but I sure would make sure of the choke tubes fit after multiple firings. In hindsight, I should have saved a few more dollars and bought the Beretta, but now I have an excuse to someday buy another one.
I suggest you visit a couple of local gunsmiths and see what they have to say about whatever brand you are considering. Gunsmiths really do get to know the quality of guns being built, which kinds of guns have problems, and what typical problems occur.

I keep going around in circles. I was thinking about having the 870 fixed and getting an O/U in addition. I have no complaints with the 870. Just curious on the opinions on the foreign O/U.
From what I am reading is pretty much what I would expect. The goods are the price, the bads are the consistency..
Save your money for awhile. (If you're right handed) Get a low end Beretta. Last I looked a new one was around $1200. The stock has the proper cast for a right hander. If you're left handed you'll have to buy a more expensive model to get the proper cast.
"The bitter taste of poor quality remains long after the sweet taste of low price is forgotten."
I have been through the Cabelas library a few times. Just never had O/U Russian models on my mind....are you kidding me...in that candy store!? I usually get overly distracted by the cowboy guns in original boxes.
I will need to roll to Lacey and look. I am left handed. Part of my reasoning for an O/U. Finding LH guns isn't an easy task unless you special order then everything is a premium brand and price.
I will make a trip down to the Lacey store again. Have my truck in the shop today getting a new rear end. Not sure how much budget will be left for a new gun. Priorities are all messed up. Fixing a truck before buying a new gun!?
I was going to buy something nice but, $1,500 into a rear end, put a crimp in my early Christmas present to myself.
I have a 20 Ga Browning grade 6 O/U that the redhead won't let me shoot (won it in a DU raffle) that is trade bait for one of these. Nice guns for the money.
If you call them and tell them Bubba sent ya- they will send the car to pick you up regards
Mossberg o/u are junk- lots of problems with the safeties not allowing the gun to fire and also both barrels firing at ounce. Got rid of mine and bought a Citori and i am really happy with the Browning
I've owned several O/Us and my all time favorite is my Browning Citori Satin Hunter in 12ga.
I HATED my SKB 685. Kicked like a mule, and didn't seem to fit me very well.
I have an Antonio Zoli that is ok, but I really like my CZ 20ga so far.
