    This sounds to me like you are judging lines to marks instead of the dog's ability to mark, is that your intention?

    Consider dog Arminius that takes straight lines to the areas of the fall and puts up hunts to find the chicken, versus dog Brutus that goes through Timbuktu to get to the areas of the fall but steps on the marks. All other work being equal, which dog gets the ribbon?

    What if Brutus deliberately avoids obstacles like heavy cover to get to the marks but still steps on them?

    First dog is going to win more.Brutus is not going to win alot with well placed marks.
