45 Years Ago. UNREAL!!!

Sweet Bride & I were in Alaska awaiting the birth of our first child. I was in Air Force Security Service working as an Analyst.

In the middle of the night a Co-worker started beating on the wall yelling "GET UP!!!!!! WE HAVE TO GO TO WORK!!!!!!!! KENNEDY HAS BEEN ASASINATED!!!"

Unreal.

I was in IBM school at Ft Ben Harrison, Indianna with the Army, when the Colonel walked in and gave us the word on Kennedy being shot. We immediately went on military full alert. Seems like such a short time ago.

I was 14 and in 8th grade at a boarding school in Geneva, Switzerland (my father was working with Union Carbide in Sicily where there were almost no schools). A group of us were playing poker when another kid, who had been listening to armed Forces radio, heard the news and came in with his radio to tell us. The next day, the whole city was in mourning. In Siricusa, Sicily, where my parents lived, the church bells rang all day and people prayed in the streets knowing the world had lost an important leader.

I was in 7th grade math class when the loudspeaker came on with the news of the shooting. I think the TV(B&W of course) was on at home every minute someone was awake until the funeral was over.

I can remember the class and hour and the teachers name of the chem class I was in. Most people remember exactly where they were and who they were with because it was so shocking. They did not allow the Zapruder film to be shown for years just because of the impact it would have on the people-even the stills they showed in Life magazine that bought the film didn't show the real hit. I just first saw the whole thing last night and it was unbelievable. I always shudder when I see presidents out in a crowd.

I was in 3rd grade and remember our teacher coming into the room after a brief trip out to the hall. She was crying as she tried to explain what had happened to a room full of 8 year olds in a public school in a rural community.

I was peddling Wonder Bread at the time and got the news back in the office around noon. Called home and my wife answered in tears. We had both voted for Nixon BTW (that was before my "age of enlightenment" ).

As I went out about my afternoon route there was an unforgettable eeriness in the air. The streets were nearly empty. What few people were in the stores were mostly quiet, in a meditation-like state. If there was a small group here or there, they were generally just looking at each other. It was a difficult afternoon.

My route was in a predominantly black area of town and most of my accounts were smaller Ma & Pa businesses ... the supermarkets had not yet put them all out of business. The mood in the following months ranged from anger to despair.

A tragedy and turmoil that triggered major change in our country.

I wasn't born yet but what i find sad is that in talking to some of the kids I know in high school today, they didn't know who Kennedy was or that he go shot.

I was in 9th grade, typing class with Mrs. Eberle. Our school princepal announced it over the school intercom. I remember the kids weren't as affected as the teachers.
