    Default "Whale Wars"

On another thread there was some discussion about HSUS, PETA, etc. and it made me think of "Whale Wars." Has anybody seen this show? It's on Fridays at 9 on Animal Planet. I was flipping through the cable tv guide and saw the title and thought "cool...whales fighting each other in death battles..I bet sperm whales totally rule!" Turns out it is a reality show about the Sea Shepherd organization's (PETA w/ a big boat) efforts to stop whaling by harrassing the Japanese whalers in the Southern Ocean. I watched a few minutes thinking it was going to make my blood boil and ended up getting hooked on the show as every episode seems to show how stupid and/or corrupt their organization is. Think Barney Fife on the open ocean. Some highlights:

    - a cat fight on the Sat. phone w/ the Greenpeace dorks because Greenpeace won't share the location of the whaling fleet w/ Sea Shepherd
    - they try to launch a big zodiac from the large mother ship while they're moving and manage to flip the zodiac with 5 people in it in 40 degree water
    - they lose contact with a zodiac in the pitch black night in the middle of the ocean while the captain is sound asleep and the hippies on the bridge scream at each other about how to best find their lost crewmates
    - two smelly hippies jump from the zodiac onto a Japanese whaling boat and when the Japs. are kind enough not to throw them back overboard into the freezing water the Sea Shepherds announce to the world that the Japs. have kidnapped two crewmen...which was their plan from the beginning.

Maybe I see what I want to see, but it seems to me that nearly anyone who watches this show will think, "man, those guys are knuckleheads...I wouldn't send them a dime."

LMAO...I've watched it once too and my thought was those stupid hippies needed to take lessons from the Somali pirates (now THERE'S a news event I'd love to see a reality TV show on!)

My son (6yo) saw the promos, and was very excited to watch the show, so we TiVO'ed it. We watched one episode together, and he lost interest. I had a good laugh watching it, though.

The crew's incompetence is rivaled only by their self-rightousness. I'm sure it's like porn for the HSUS/PETA crowd, but I think most mainstream viewers are watching it to for the comedy of errors.

In truth the Japanese are not being quite honest about their whaling activities.

CANBERRA, Australia — Australia released grisly surveillance pictures of the slain carcasses of two whales being hauled aboard a ship, stepping up its campaign Thursday against Japanese whaling in Antarctic waters.
I don't blame Australia or anyone else for protesting these "Scientific Specimen gathering" forays.

The images were taken by an Australian customs ship that has tracked the Japanese fleet in the Antarctic Ocean for the past month gathering evidence for a diplomatic and legal battle against whaling.

Hideki Moronuki, chief of the Japanese Fishing Agency's whaling section, denied that one of the photographs depicted a calf.

"The fleet is engaged in random sampling, which means they are taking both large and small whales. This is not a parent and calf," Moronuki said.
LOL ...OK the large and small whale were simply being pulled on board at he same time. Are they going to believe what they saw ...or what Moronuki tells them?

Hey, this thread's about mocking the Sea Shepherd freaks as they search for new ways to accidently kill themselves. If you want to french kiss a minke whale you should start another thread!

I'm an ole hippie and I don't know what to do.
Hippies are good people they just have a few bugs I'm sure the bugs are nice bugs.
I have been watching this show and I woke my wife up from a dead sleep (not happy) because of the IDIOTS getting on the whaling boat and then screaming HOSTAGE. The sea shepard was very concerned for a minute that they would get thrown over board, and there plans would be foiled.
I would have put them in the water or shot them for being pirates what with the big pirate scare going on. ARRGH..
I don't think the Japanese were very smart in how they handled the situation.
They need to get the acid that stinks and let the boat come up beside it and douse them down with that stuff somehow mixing it in the water cannons Kinda like miracle grow I guess it would be miracle stink.
