On another thread there was some discussion about HSUS, PETA, etc. and it made me think of "Whale Wars." Has anybody seen this show? It's on Fridays at 9 on Animal Planet. I was flipping through the cable tv guide and saw the title and thought "cool...whales fighting each other in death battles..I bet sperm whales totally rule!"Turns out it is a reality show about the Sea Shepherd organization's (PETA w/ a big boat) efforts to stop whaling by harrassing the Japanese whalers in the Southern Ocean. I watched a few minutes thinking it was going to make my blood boil and ended up getting hooked on the show as every episode seems to show how stupid and/or corrupt their organization is. Think Barney Fife on the open ocean. Some highlights:
- a cat fight on the Sat. phone w/ the Greenpeace dorks because Greenpeace won't share the location of the whaling fleet w/ Sea Shepherd
- they try to launch a big zodiac from the large mother ship while they're moving and manage to flip the zodiac with 5 people in it in 40 degree water
- they lose contact with a zodiac in the pitch black night in the middle of the ocean while the captain is sound asleep and the hippies on the bridge scream at each other about how to best find their lost crewmates
- two smelly hippies jump from the zodiac onto a Japanese whaling boat and when the Japs. are kind enough not to throw them back overboard into the freezing water the Sea Shepherds announce to the world that the Japs. have kidnapped two crewmen...which was their plan from the beginning.
Maybe I see what I want to see, but it seems to me that nearly anyone who watches this show will think, "man, those guys are knuckleheads...I wouldn't send them a dime."
