Animal Cloning / Bull Riding GDG

Thought that a few here might find this interesting. The cloning topic has been discussed a few times regarding the viability of recreational/performance animals.

Pictures are of 6 cloned bulls. The "sire" was Dr. Procter. Two of the clones are twins. These twin are said to be the first know twins of a cloned animal. The pictures show they look the same but still do not do them justice. You cannot tell these guys apart. I was feeding them "treats" before the event and everything right down to their nose hairs is exactly the same.

The owner is a customer of mine, he said they cannot tell them apart but, their personalities do slightly differ. They are young bulls and won't be ridden until next rodeo season. (if they come out like their Dad, Dr. Procter, they won't be ridden at all)

Red Brahmans all look alike….cloning hasn’t got much support in the bull business and cloning Dr. Proctor is like cloning a 70 Buick…the bull is very common.

I was going to say, cloning Dr. Proctor is like cloning a short white guy in the NBA. Not much future....

the NFR (National Finals Rodeo) is here in Las Vegas this week, wouldnt anyone want to see another Bull like Bodacious or if Martha Josey could have cloned her barrel racing horse

Very interesting.

It seems doubtful that these clones will be exactly the same. The genetic component is only one part of the equation that makes up an animal's phenotype. You also have environmental effects and maternal effects and interaction among all three (and other things going on too). From what I have read, cloned animals do not always even exhibit the same color pattern and we all know identical twins often have different characteristics despite identical genomes.

Can you just imagine a short round filled with 15 clones of Bodacious. Make you want to go hide or at least fake an injury.

Nuture vs. Nature----has been argued over many developmental subjects.

Shane(driver) was telling me they all have different personalities. They are surprisingly friendly when they are not working but, they are also young and haven't spent alot of time in the chutes. It will be fun to watch them next year. They are training and won't be ridden for a while. You really cannot tell the difference in these guys. You have to look at their numbers to tell who is who. The look exactly the same. Even the markings around their nose and mouth.

I still find the whole cloning subject interesting.....You will see more bulls coming from Dr. Procter...he wasn't at the event, he was home a few miles away with a couple ladies....
