    Default Frontline/Ticks

Okay, I've just pulled three ticks off my dog. It's been 3 or 4 days since we were last in the field. I apply Frontline at the first of every month (give or take a day or two) and am careful that he doesn't swim within 24 hours before or after application. I'm fairly certain I'm getting the application all the way down to the skin...I've never had this problem before, but also pulled a fat tick off him the week of Thanksgiving. I chalked that up to possibly being at the 3-week mark of effectiveness for ticks, but this is only a week into the application; it should be working great right now. Any thoughts? Anyone had similar experiences? With number of ticks up here in the Northeast and the prevalence of tick-borne disease, I really want to make sure he's protected...

That's why I stopped using frontline and switched to k9Advantix...haven't had those problems since.

Are you using Frontline Plus? I think that's more effective that the plain Frontline. I apply FPlus every 3 weeks during tick season and this year I have my dog wearing a Preventik collar also. I'm thinking of alternating with K9 Advantage. Like you, I check the dogs thoroughly before they come in the house after being in the field.

Could you have any ticks in the house or wherever the dogs live? I had a pregnant tick get through my Frontline Plus last year and got a tick infestation in the kitchen and back hall. Took 4 months to clear it up. Now I spray preventatively in the dog habitat areas with professional strength stuff. I may be taking years off my life but I'll just kick the bucket sooner - happy and tick free.

Also, where are you buying the Frontline? Frontline from places like PetCo are counterfeit and the effectiveness is variable.

SloppyMouth - It's funny its been pretty cold for ticks up here in the Northeast. Your pup's hunting partner also uses Frontline Plus and didn't get any ticks on him. The place where we hunted is known for beng infested with ticks and chiggers, I'm surprised that they are actually moving this time of year. There was a pretty good frost on the ground in the morning. Every once in awhile Divot gets one or two on him and I wonder the same thing about Frontline's effectiveness. Everyone tells me that FP needs 24 hours to work and that a tick needs to be imbedded for 24-48 hours before its able to transmit Lyme's disease. My dog gets his monthly dose religiously, same as yours, about the 15th of the month along with his heartworm pill. This year I had two ticks embedded on hm (cheek and groin) so it must work to some extent. The cheek one was engorged, the groin one was just staring to be attached.

It needs to be Frontline Plus to be effective against ticks, and I switch from FPlus to K9Advantix (not K9Advantage) during warmer months because of its additional protection against mosquitos.

If you are, in fact, using Frontline Plus, the ticks you found should have been dead. As I understand it, FP won't keep ticks from biting but kills them before the Lyme disease bug has time to gestate and be transfered.
If you think I'm wrong, you might be right.

I had the same problem awhile back and indeed the package I had was a counterfeit that I bought online. Have not had a problme since I started buying directly from my vet.

The EPA has issued guidance for determining whether Frontline is legitimate or counterfeit.

That information is available at here http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/factsheets/petproduct.htm

How did you confirm that it was counterfeit?

That is a pretty strong accusation.

Do you have any supporting info regarding PetCo and counterfeit Frontline ?
