stud dog
I had a hot shot come into my office telling me about this great new pup that he just got. He proceeded to tell me that he was going to get all kinds of titles and put him out to stud and get ALL his money back and then some. He says that he is going to do all the training him self, I asked who he trained under no answer. My question is can you make that kind of money off a stud dog to break even? Could you make your money back on a puppies.
This is not the reason that I have my dogs.
If you don't count vet bills, training, food, health clearances and entry fees, you might recover his initial purchase price. Otherwise, he would have to be one really busy boy to get enough out of stud fees to make up.
You're right, not why you have dogs.

It depends on how good the dog is. If he is one of the very few that end up with a NFC or NAFC and depending at what age he gets these titles. Say he did it by the time he was say 6. Males can be breed untill about age 12. Then you could have frozen semen available.
What am I saying I don't think you could ever recoupe the investment you put into your dog, or at least very few do. If you took this up to make $ I feel sorry for you when you realize that probably won't happen.

I know some VERY successful stud dog owners who probably ship semen out once a day throughout the year on their boys, so yes, I think it CAN be done. Commonly? NOT AT ALL. It is more than just the dog himself...it is about his pedigree, the health clearances of not only him but his extended family, etc. etc. etc.

Well 2.4% of all puppies in field/show homes make something of themselves.
Of those only 62% are males.
Of those males only 3.2% are successful stud dogs.
So that is.. out of every 100 pups, only .0476% of them will become successful stud dogs!
