Unhappy OK, now I feel really old

I clicked on this link ( http://www.tealwoodkennel.com/LightBrigade1.html ) on the "Lab Split" thread and realized that the guy in those old pictures handling Briggs is/was a professional handler who I used to come up against all the time when I began showing/field trialing German shorthairs back in the early 1970s. Can't remember his name (probably a senility thing), but that's him.

    Eeek!!!

Heading to the old folks' home regards,

    Wink

Don, the gentleman showing Briggs is Dick Cooper, a venerable professional handler from Illinois. Dick passed away some years ago, but showed dogs well into his '70s.

We can't both be that old!

Oh, I just looked at your pictures! The saddest thing is that I remember those venues very well.

    Maybe we are getting old!

That's it. I kept thinking that his last name started with a "C". Wasn't there also another handler named Cooper but from PA? No, wait, that was two named Patterson, maybe. I had one, Ron Patterson as I recall, of them handle my champion (in the pics) at Chagrin Valley KC while she was still in the classes because it was a GSP specialty. Ended up only taking a 3d in Open. After she titled, she ended up taking BoB at the Woodland Specialty in Grand Rapids with ME handling. (That picture with the late Bill Geisenhafer judging and that giant trophy).

Don, your memory is really shot. Of course, you were just a child back then! Jack Patterson is the handler you're thinking of from the Western PA area. Jack is still around, although he is no longer able to handle dogs. Hip and knee replacements have pretty much put him out of the game.

I have to admit that a lot of the pictures I have on the walls are with dead people. That's what happens when you have been playing this game for a long time. Sigh ...

No, there were two Pattersons, not related. Jack and Ron. Ron was a pretty good guy. Jack was a jerk. I remember a few times in the ring when I was just ahead of Jack in line. As we came to a stop after gating around the ring, Jack would run up on the rear of my dog so as to unnerve her and give me insufficient space to pose her. My solution? Take about 3 steps out in front of the line and pose her so that her rump and tail blocked Jack's dog's head. More than once, we ended up with a placement while someone else walked out of the ring with nothing.
