    Thumbs down Broken femur

My youngest male( 9 months) hit a ditch and flipped training today and broke his right femur. He goes in for surgery tomorrow morning and from what I was told there are several options for setting the bone. I am trusting the surgeon to do what is best but I am curious if anyone else has had an experience like this. Later complications with training, recovery times etc... Thanks for your help.

i had a female get hit by a car at 5 months. broke the head of her femur off completely and broke the growth plate off as well.

dr randy acker in sun valley idaho pinned it all back together and she made a full recovery. she now has her SH and runs just as well as any other dog. her leg grew normal like the others and she is great. OFA even analyzed her hips as Good.

    good luck to you!

My MH bitch "Jiggy" broke her leg above and thru her growth plate at 7 months. Dr.Wayne Whitney put 2- 4 inch rods in her leg and the rest has been history. She has OFA Excellent hips, and TONS of go!!! You would never know that she had ever broken her leg.

Best wishes in a full recovery and successful career!!!

    Hoping for the best.

I remember breaking my ankle in high school. Spending a couple months on the sidelines really made me hungry to get back out there. Let's hope your pup has a similar result.

My lab broke his R femur last June while playing with another dog. The break occurred in 8 places. They placed a plate and screws in. The hardest part was keeping him down and contained for the healing time. With in 2 days of surgery he was attempting to run and on the 4th day he managed to jump out of a 4 foot high kennel that he was temporally in while I cleaned his pen.

I kept him down for 8 weeks and waited until 16 weeks until I did any serious training. He is doing great with no side affects or long term deficits.

He is running his first Master tomorrow.
