The Ruffalo boys from Rochester--David and Stephen. I've seen David throw a pigeon, duck or pheasant with one hand and shoot it--you only need David at the station. Must be the 30 years of "training" they got from Carl.
John Unbehaun also throws & shoots a very nice bird!
I hear Dr EdA is a pretty fair shot, might explain why he is the head of the gun committee at the NRC...the best I have personally seen was a skinny 16 yr old kid we had shoot for us yrs ago, carried a 10lb Rem 3200 O/U with tubes, found out later he had won the world 12 ga skeet championship..one shot, consistently dropped the bird in the same area the size of a kiddie wading pool
I'll clarify, what I meant when I said best flyer shooter was just a one man show.... throw and shoot on their own with no back up. Most that have been mentioned are one man shows..
Ken Wampler I know has gone to Nationals to shoot, and he was a gunner at a derby I judged, and we had to tell him to let those ducks fly a little more.
I remember Joie and I were down training in front of Mike Lardy's house one afternoon. We had brought a few flyers and Joie was the one-man show. For anyone that knew Joie, one of his hands had his fingers only to the first knuck of each. The other of his hands only had a full thumb, and then a little bit of his pointer finger (used to pull the trigger) and a little big of his pinky. In between was a muscle flap the docs has put in... And he could do an incredible job on his own, which I took for granted...
I remember Dave Smith walking up and I forget the exact words, but it was something about how every other flyer shooter should be embarrassed... LOL
I have several- it's prolly a tie so no particular order.
J. Paul Jackson
Alan Pleasant
Jeff Bryson
Don Meyers (he is in that bunch that /paul hangs with)
The secret to any gunning station is the thrower and I nominate Jerry Collingham as the best ever with Patty Keirnans Billy Cox as a close runner up (heck of a shooter and pretty dern entertaining as well)

The two best I have ever seen...when Paul and I shot flyers together we never had a no bird on our account but Eddie and Gary ride birds out to ridiculous distances.
In the South, Cara Mock can flat shoot a bird. There is a guy who can too, but I don't know his name- see him at Cooper Black some.Mel and her Husband Joe are good as well, they winter down here.
Your thinking about Johnny Fogle. That's who I thought about when I saw this thread. If the dogs didn't pick them up I believe they would be stacked up in one spot. The best I have seen.
has been shooting fliers since the 1960's for the Madison retriever club.
Also a long time gun captain.
Member of the gunners at both nationals for numerous years.
Shoot fliers for Andy Attar on an almost daily basis for at least 10 years and that includes going to GA with him for the winter
You will not find a more dedicated shooter of birds for field trials and hunt tests that Don Preston with almost 50 years or "riding out the birds"
Thank you Don for all of the birds you have shot for me at field trials and then in training

This is the one I was going to name..... there is none better. My dogs have been very lucky to have Don around to shoot for them! And, on top of that, he's one of the nicest guys you could ever meet...
Ben, my boy toy.......There are actually3 that I can think of. 1. Ben Vaillin 2.Gabe Schmudlach. 3.He worked for Mike as well and he worked with Gabe during the days of the big dogs. These boys could let that bird sail and fall EXACTLY in the spot Mike wanted it and never missed.... Fondly, Lorri O
