Yes it is, but we need to watch our six. Watch out for words like diversity, and localazation. I think they know the uproar reinacting the F.D. would create so they will probably try something a little more on the sly.

Thanks! now I can keep listening to Rush ,O Rielly and Sean Hannity and getting the straight talk instead of the party line from the drive by media.

    And here is the rub...

But that language was struck by a second amendment, introduced by Senator Dick Durbin (D-ILL), that instead, explicitly reaffirmed the commission's power to seek to promote diversity in media ownership.

...The Dems can't promote a Fairness Doctrine because it would be too openly blatant an attempt to gag the media that questions the Dems Methods of Madness. It is too openly an assualt on Free Speech. What they will try is to silence the opposition and Free Speech by breaking up large broadcast companies that aren't in step with the new socialist aganda. The will do it under the banner of minority ownership and diversity.

What the Dems don't understand is that broadcasting is a business and that ratings equate to revenue. Of course, that may not matter if the Feds are going to float these new companies' financial loses with our tax dollars in their quest for more censorship of dissenting views.

It's such a shame that in the USA, defending Liberty has become such a heroic deed.

Just look at the large corporation known as Radio One, a minority run comapny that is publicly traded.

When deregulation happened in 1996, the Feds had a program that afforded minority owners financing at rates much lower than what was available to the rest of the companies. They also offered tax incentives to station sellers if they sold to minorities, discriminating against non-blacks.

Radio One is a money pit. There is only so much Hip Hop and Rap music to go around. They can't give their stock away. Yet, the Feds want more of this!

    INSANE!

They believe we have the freedom of speech, but the constitution doesn't guarrentee anybody the freedom to listen ( heard that on Hannity today, and liked it) and its because their ideas can't stand any type of scrutany, and the proof of that is the indisputable fact that they ( the Libs ) can't make a go in talk radio, once people start disecting their talking points they quickly realize they won't hold water, ergo they ( the Libs ) have to try and bring the playing field down to their level, instead of rising to the standard thats been set.

Booty, with all due respect, I think we need to celebrate the small victories as they come. Keeping the FD on the down low was a BIG win for broadcasters and listeners. CHOICE is still there. Now, with regard to minority ownership and diversity, there are NO monopolies in the media business today that didn't become that way due to attrition of their competition. Yes, there are LARGE companies...but no monopolies that have "ownership" of their medium to the exclusivity of competition. It's a free market economy if you've got the jack. Electronic media is so regulated as it is that "breaking up" large broadcast companies by the government would be counterproductive to what the government has tried to do with media since 1996 with the passing of the Telecommunications Act.

What the Dems don't understand is that broadcasting is a business and that ratings equate to revenue. Of course, that may not matter if the Feds are going to float these new companies' financial loses with our tax dollars in their quest for more censorship of dissenting views.
Franco, how big is the communications lobby in Washington? You know as well as I do: it's HUGE! I can think of about a hundred (look at the "steal from us" plan) different directions the gooberment is going to take our tax dollars before they even THINK about broadcasting companies (which they won't do; it's a stretch)....and as for ratings equaling revenue, we won't see that again for at least two years. Stations are cutting rates like never before...how big their ratings are don't matter one whit. The best thing that will come out of this recession media-wise is the demise of the daily newspaper.

Again, with all due respect, the same exact thing has happened with companies that did NOT get the same kind of support (they got it, but not at the same level). Look at Charter Communications, Citadel, Clear Channel, and a host of others. Their stock is a mere shadow of what it used to be. They are ALL money pits to an extent, some are just worse than others.

It's a liberal pipe dream at best regards,

They know their ideas won't hold up to scrutiny so, they want to get as much of the opposition off the air as possible.

I'll use Rush Limbaugh as an example though I seldom listen to him.

Rush came on the scene in July of 87 as a replacement to many stations for the ailing Owen Span. Several years ago, Premier Radio Networks was purchased by Clear Channel of San Antonio, Tx. Rush had already single-handidly saved a.m. radio with his popularity. PRN and CC own the rights to Rush. I'm sure that Rush's $40,000,000.00 annual income is absolutly detested by many Democrats.

If the Dems get a Diversity Bill passed that requires large broadcasters like Clear Channel, Cox Radio, Entercom etc. to sell some of their stations to minorites, Rush WILL lose some local radio affliates. This is exactly what the Dems want to do. Silence as much of the opposition as they can with an end run around Free Speech in the name of diversity.

Radio and TV programming is revenue driven. The listening or viewing public votes with thier consumption of media. If they don't like Rush, they have choices now. There is already Liberal Talk in most cities. Most aren't aware of those outlets because no one, not even the Liberals pay any attention to them. Just look at MSNBC's Rachael Ray, her ratings can't get any lower. So, it is not about cloices as much as the Dems can't handle dissenting views!

I understand where you're going...but this will NEVER happen. There aren't enough "anti-business" democrats in office, regardless of party affiliation. Look at it this way: it's not gonna happen in his first term; too many other things are are on the front burner. Now, if hell freezes over and he's re-elected, THEN we might have something to be concerned with. I didn't use the word "worry" on purpose.

I take this language for what it is. The new FCC Commissioner has the power to"SEEK", intimidate, break up and write the rules on who qualifies as diversity in media ownership.

Interesting to note that all the companies mentioned in this thread are publicly trade with the exception of Clear Channel which reverted back to private ownership last year.

Anyone with money to invest can purchase stock in any of those companies. How much more diversified can you get?
