my dog has a weird vagina part II

the other day i posted that my dog had some pus coming out so I took heed from the members on the board and had her in to be checked for pyometra. she didn't have it, thank goodness, but had some vaginitis. so she is on an antibiotic.

yesterday, sunday, she started her heat. ok. that's cool. today we went training and on the third mark i looked at her and it looked like she had a red water balloon on her butt. so i brought her in and had a look. her vulva is wiiiiidddde open and the innards of her vagina seem to be pushing outward.

what the? nothing is coming out. it just looks like her rear end when she is turtle necking, but it's her vagina. what a squirly dog. guess its off to the vet...again.

I had a chessie bitch years ago with the same problem. I can't remember the technical name, but it was something about a prolapsed vagina. I should have spayed her then - I think that helps.

I just went through this...Spaying is a good thing, but not absolutely necessary - It depends on how bad it gets.

It is vaginal hyperplasia. I kept the 'balloon' moist with KY jelly and a doggy diaper. Thankfully it never got bigger than a large plum....(but they can get much larger)THe diaper helped to keep her from licking and messing with her back end. The key is to keep it from drying out and having the tissue die or become necrotic...

It is not a fun thing for females to have to go through, but overall I think it was worse for me than it was for her. I will likely spay my girl if it re-occurs on her next heat cycle and is worse than the first occurrence -

There is some question as to whether breeding on the next heat cycle will help to 'normalize' the hormones...about 60% of bitches with hyperplasia will have re-occurences of it, and they do tend to get worse with each cycle.

just try to keep her as comfortable as possible. It could very well go away when she comes into standing heat and her hormone levels change.

Also - natural breedings may not be possible with a bitch who has hyperplasia...depends on how much the swelling goes down...AI is probably a more realistic breeding option.

The reason is that your dogs hormones are out of wack (to much estrigen). Lots of vets will recommend that you spay your dog. Of course for some of us this isn't a great option. It will decrease in size after her cycle. Make sure that this doesn't dry out! Dog will have serious problems then. A littermate to one of my dogs has the same issue. A vet in Omaha is doing some experimental type stuff to try and help her. If you do breed your bitch it will need to be done surgically more than likely.

just got back from the vet. she said it is a prolapsed vagina and recommended that we spay at some point. that sucks. i'm not against it, but Daisy is my most talented dog. I will probably do some sort of AI breeding with her and keep a pup. She also gave me some KY looking stuff to keep it moist. Anyway, I had a natural stud to breed her to this go-round to avoid some of the costs of AI, but if it needs to be done anyway and it might be her only litter, I may as well go big eh. Is it doable this time around. She just started her heat on sunday.

I have doctored a young calf suffering from the same problem although it was a rectum, not a vagina..

it goes something like this.....tuck it all back in.....then.......

a needle about a yard long, some sterile shoe string material....work it around like you're putting a new drawstring an old pair of sweat pants....

that advice was free, the next time it'll cost ya......

It usually goes down at the time they are ready to breed and you can breed naturally.

Don't know the vets name. Like I said it is the littermate to my dog. The information that I've been getting has been through the dogs pro. Which is a good friend of mine.
