Default Political Correctness (PC) the loss of words and phrases

Political Correctness – the loss of words and phrases

Obviously, in recent years political correctness (PC) has affected our language. We are prevented from using many words or phrases in the name of political correctness.

Here are a couple of recent ones that I find a bit foolish but are reported to be what the current administration is moving toward using, but I expect some find them needed.

    Terrorism: "man-caused" disasters
War on Terror: "overseas contingency operations,"

What political correct phrases do you find objectionable? Or, what phrases that are currently in use do you think need to be replaced with a PC version?

One that I find, historically, to be a bit foolish is the renaming of the War Department to the Defense Department.

This post is for both left and right.

What do you find foolish? What do you find needed?

When did "welfare" turn to "public assistance" and why? Rhetorical question... I already know why.

As I alluded to in another post concerning how far the PC nazis have taken their 'game', it's now at a stage that formerly sane people are beginning to climb on that bus.

As you may recall, Joe, there were books about PC changes in the vernacular that were written as a joke; like the author certainly didn't expect that "language correction" to be anything BUT a joke. Like I said, it appears the jokes on us.

The PC 'changes' are far more than calling a bald guy "follically challenged", or a short person "vertically challenged". As you mentioned, the PC terminology for Terrorism, or War on Terror, has changed the meaning by design. It's become another instance of the tail-wagging-the-dog syndrome.

It's just another illustration of what the left is capable of doing via their many products coming from the institutes of higher learning in this country.

Remember when we used to take pride in being a conservationist? When it meant we were concerned about our environment, and wanted to invest time and money to make sure it was properly administered. Now, I find the term "environmentalist" as inviting as calling me a Nazi.

Same is true when it comes to the welfare of our animals. But the AR groups have so totally distorted that view, it is as if some communistic tyrants are now in charge of that aspect of our society.

It all began so innocently...like the PC craze...so ludicrous it had to be a joke...but then...

Make no mistake, it's all part of the same movement...the same "religion", if you will. And while 'some' of the preppys and their profs may have started it as just a light-hearted bit of tomfoolery, the committed leftists saw it as another area they could exploit, and progressively make it into a meaningful movement for their cause...which should be pretty evident by now for even the most hard-to-convince citizen...the socialistic conversion of the nation.

Cynical???...damned right. If anyone on this BB thinks I'm wrong, when will you finally have your eyes opened? When the government has taken over the entire broadcast industry? (which I'm sure many of you are salivating over).

Will it be when your freedom to reload the rounds for your deer rifle are no longer allowed? Or will it take the loss of your favorite automatic you use for hunting to be outlawed? The forces to do all that are right now being drafted by those that want this nation to die; its' constitution to be irrelevant; its' freedoms to be revoked so only the aristocracy of the left and their government will be in charge. A nanny state to care for all, except the group that considers themselves the Atlas...the providers...the members of society that take individual responsibility for their lives, and expect their God-given freedoms to not be encroached upon.

Many on this BB don't view what's happening to this nation with anything but glee. They ARE the PC students of the left, and have been blinded to the point where they can't see their freedoms being legislated away. They will happily give their guns over for the meltdown. They will search for anyone that doesn't comply with their socialistic government's requests for compliance, and gladly turn them in. It will be such a 'feelgood' performance.

Just remember to come prepared, because we lifetimers of the NRA will be steadfast, abiding by our former presidents proclamation..."out of our cold dead hands!"

    All other issues aside...

I heard a pretty interesting and convincing argument that the phrase "war on terror" may help serve to elevate terrorism in the eyes of terrorists to something worthy and extraordinary, and a cohesive movement. The person making the argument suggested calling them criminals and murderers rather than terrorists, and rather than fighting a war on terror say that we were fighting criminals and murderers. His logic was that we should do as Great Britain had--The British government abandoned calling the IRA terrorists and instead referred to them by their crimes. The person making the argument suggested that with regular use it took them down a whole bunch of notches psychologically and avoided giving them the benefit of "movement" status with every news report and instead suggested they were rogues.

Wish I could remember more particulars of when and where I heard this--could have been anywhere--but the logic stuck with me.

I have been away overloaded with school. This BB has changed a lot if many are viewing what's happening to this nation with glee. I don't have that problem with the people in my MBA classes, or even instructors. One of my classes is taught by two professors that talks about duck hunting or dog training in every other lecture.

I'm not sure you were responding to me--if not, I'll apologize in advance for the misunderstanding--but I hope you don't think that's what I was suggesting.

I was suggesting that there is a rhetorical logic to calling those who kill innocent people murderers.

(If anything, it's calling a turd a turd, not polishing it.)

PC What a joke. Yep..call a turd a turd whether it is fresh or been ther for a while.

I am an American. My family tree comes form Germany, France..... yuck, and Dutch.
I say it again, I am an American. Not a German American, not a French American, nor a Dutch American. I have many clients that are from foregin countrys who have gone through the ness. channels to acheive ther citizenship. They call themselves Americans! not Iranian Americans, Russian Americans,or Itialian Americans!
So why African Americans. Why can't they be Americans.

New minority...naaaa..national assosiation for the advancement of anglo americans....

One of the most damaging PC terms has been referring to the poor as the "less fortunate". That term is insidious in that it has permeated the public psyche and lends us to believe that if you are financially comfortable, then you must be lucky and if you are poor, you must simply be unlucky.
While there are many situations where chance plays a role in your success, for the most part your station in life can be directly attributed to the effort you put into your education and your occupation.
For those who chose not to get an education, who chose not to work hard for long hours, who chose criminal behavior or alcoholism or teen pregnancy, it is very difficult to take responsibility. It's much easier to consider yourself "less fortunate" than lazy or irresponsible. The problem is that this mentality is what leads to many of our social problems and we have a whole group of well-meaning folks who are quick to make excuses for the "less fortunate" and demonize the evil "rich" and so you get what we have here today in this country.
