Not Checking up???

gotta love when you are 10 days from your first derby and you realize the dog is not checking up. He is blowing past the close bird (100 yrds) and going for the long gun (300 yrds) inline double. Pretty sure it has to do with the 12 inches of grass that is hiding the bumper. He steps on the bird but since he can not see it he keeps going. Have talked to some people to get an answer and trying some new stuff now. Curious what others have done.

any ideas.

For what it's worth, I've never done a derby... so I can't recall if you can handle your dog or not... I think probably not...

But if it were a test/trial, I'd whistle him and direct him on...?? I guess it depends on the series...

Like I said, for what it's worth... not much huh? Dangit.

what i did is ran the same concept but in shorter grass then when the dog had that down went back to the heaver cover. worked for me but it took 3-4 weeks. i don't know of a faster way to do it.

been using nothing but birds in shorter grass. Been using multiple guns(whites) as singles. Happened when I set up with dokkens.
