Default For those feeling the pinch in these trying times....

It's nice to know our First Lady is setting such a stellar example of frugality.

No, Michele Obama does not get paid to serve as the First Lady and she doesnít perform any official duties. But this hasnít deterred her from hiring an unprecedented number of staffers to cater to her every whim and to satisfy her every request in the midst of the Great Recession. Just think Mary Lincoln was taken to task for purchasing china for the White House during the Civil War. And Mamie Eisenhower had to shell out the salary for her personal secretary.

How things have changed! If youíre one of the tens of millions of Americans facing certain destitution, earning less than subsistence wages stocking the shelves at Wal-Mart or serving up McDonald cheeseburgers, prepare to scream and then come to realize that the benefit package for these servants of Miz Michele are the same as members of the national security and defense departments and the bill for these assorted lackeys is paid by John Q. Public:

$172,2000 - Sher, Susan (CHIEF OF STAFF)
$140,000 - Frye, Jocelyn C. (DEPUTY ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT AND DIRECTOR OF POLICY AND PROJECTS FOR THE FIRST LADY)
$113,000 - Rogers, Desiree G. (SPECIAL ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT AND WHITE HOUSE SOCIAL SECRETARY)
$102,000 - Johnston, Camille Y. (SPECIAL ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT AND DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS FOR THE FIRST LADY)
Winter, Melissa E. (SPECIAL ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT AND DEPUTY CHIEF OF STAFF TO THE FIRST LADY)
$90,000 - Medina, David S. (DEPUTY CHIEF OF STAFF TO THE FIRST LADY)
$84,000 - Lelyveld, Catherine M. (DIRECTOR AND PRESS SECRETARY TO THE FIRST LADY)
$75,000 - Starkey, Frances M. (DIRECTOR OF SCHEDULING AND ADVANCE FOR THE FIRST LADY)
$70,000 - Sanders, Trooper (DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF POLICY AND PROJECTS FOR THE FIRST LADY)
$65,000 - Burnough, Erinn J. (DEPUTY DIRECTOR AND DEPUTY SOCIAL SECRETARY)
Reinstein, Joseph B. (DEPUTY DIRECTOR AND DEPUTY SOCIAL SECRETARY)
$62,000 - Goodman, Jennifer R. (DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF SCHEDULING AND EVENTS COORDINATOR FOR THE FIRST LADY)
$60,000 - Fitts, Alan O. (DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF ADVANCE AND TRIP DIRECTOR FOR THE FIRST LADY)
Lewis, Dana M. (SPECIAL ASSISTANT AND PERSONAL AIDE TO THE FIRST LADY)
$52,500 - Mustaphi, Semonti M. (ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR AND DEPUTY PRESS SECRETARY TO THE FIRST LADY)
$50,000 - Jarvis, Kristen E. (SPECIAL ASSISTANT FOR SCHEDULING AND TRAVELING AIDE TO THE FIRST LADY)
$45,000 - Lechtenberg, Tyler A. (ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE FIRST LADY)
Tubman, Samantha (DEPUTY ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR,SOCIAL OFFICE)
$40,000 - Boswell, Joseph J. (EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT TO THE CHIEF OF STAFF TO THE FIRST LADY)
$36,000 - Armbruster, Sally M. (STAFF ASSISTANT TO THE SOCIAL SECRETARY)
    Bookey, Natalie (STAFF ASSISTANT)
Jackson, Deilia A. (DEPUTY ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE FIRST LADY)

(I don't know who's been waiting for her but I sure wish they'd come get her!)

Do the jobs under 100K have an "all you can steal" fringe benefit?

Were all these positions created de novo for M.O.? Did Laura Bush wash her own dishes, or did she have some staffers as well? Where was the outrage with other first ladies?

How much is Laura and her two girls costing us in SS protection? Or is that somehow different?

I think those numbers are outrageous. But so is the selective outrage and hypocrisy.

I can see how Obama is getting more jobs to the unemployed. They have become Whitehose staff.

First things first: I know I sound like a broken record between dnf and Perry et al. So let me type it slower in case you had trouble the other several dozen times this has been posted:

BUSH IS NOT PRESIDENT ANY MORE.
OK that said, yes, the current First Lady has far outspent ANY of her predecessors after just 6 months in office and during desperate times when the country has a 10 percent unemployment rate and businesses shutttering daily.

And I'll be willing to bet you $100 today that when Obongo is no longer president that he, family including spawn and relatives will cost more in SS protection than the Bush family.

Ms. Armbruster's getting screwed! $36,000 is all she gets? Michelle has handbags worth more than that. Whatever happened to the liberals and their living wage pledge? Sally could make more money mowing lawns.

I'll type slow too...neither is Clinton or Carter, care to count the references on this list? Clinton even joked several years into the W regime, that when he turned on the news, he thought he was still president!

The reason bush keeps coming up, is that we (and our children and grandchildren) will be suffering the effects of his failed presidency for generations to come. And those who have lost loved ones in his unjust war in Iraq will suffer endlessly.

BTW, how much of my tax dollars went to an 85yo to jump out of a US ARMY airplane, with full escorts and Security? (I have the utmost respect for the senior Bush, who actually served his country) But I didn't want you to miss out on any outrage, while you're fired up.

I think it is different. SS protection for former POTUS and family are SOP. Since O and family are quite young, we'll be paying for many more years for their family.

The # of assistants hired for a First Lady would be discretionary.

Is there a budget assigned to First Lady expenses? Is it part of the White House overall budget? If there is no budget for these expenses, why not?

And I would agree, how can those staffers earning less than $50K/year afford to live in DC?! Are some of those jobs "part-time"?
