Actually I never said anything against Bush until 2006 after his second term started.

So if you are going to give Obama the same consideration, wait until he is well into his first term.

Does anybody out there have any memory of the reason given for the establishment of the DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY ..... During the Carter Administration?

Bottom line ... We've spent several hundred billion dollars in support of an agency ...the reasonfor which not one person who reads this can remember.

The 'Department of Energy' was instituted on

    8-04-1977

    TO LESSEN OUR DEPENDENCE

    ON FOREIGN OIL.

    Hey, pretty efficient, huh?????

    AND NOW IT'S

    32 YEARS LATER ...

    AND THE BUDGET FOR THIS

    NECESSARY DEPARTMENT

    IS AT

    $24.2 BILLION A YEAR

    IT HAS

    16,000FEDERAL EMPLOYEES
    AND APPROXIMATELY 100,000
    CONTRACT EMPLOYEES

AND LOOK AT THE JOB IT HAS DONE!

    THIS IS WHERE YOU

    SLAP YOUR FOREHEAD AND SAY

    'WHAT WAS I THINKING?'

    Ah, yes, good old bureaucracy...

And NOW _ we are going to turn the Banking System, Health Care & the Auto Industry over to government?

    May God Help Us !!!

So Keith, are saying we all were better off at the start of 2009 than we were at the end of 2000?

For those with short memories, the Department of Energy was created in 1977 by consolidating the efforts of what had been the Atomic Energy Commission (responsible for all aspects of the country's nuclear weapons programs) along with a variety of diverse regulatory and and research activities. It was more a renaming and consolidation than a new creation and its primary focus for many years remained nuclear weapons and regulation of nuclear reactors and the disposal of nuclear waste. It was not created to reduce oil consumption although that was added to its mandate over time, and it was not provided with any massive infusion of new money. Having grown up in Oak Ridge, which was almost entirely created and run by the Atomic Energy Commission, we were very aware of how huge thsat operation was.
