Ugly...and graphic. Sorry!

As if we (my Sadie and I) haven't been through enough weird stuff, now she has diarrhea. And I'm not talkin' some funny little soft stuff here: this is virtually liquid, and this afternoon it was also loud. She doesn't seem to be in any discomfort...she doesn't have any loss of appetite...she has no loss of energy...it's just that over the last week or so, "things" have been getting looser and looser. No blood or anything else strange...just damned runny.

Tonight I gave her 1/2 regular kibble and 1/2 cooked rice along with one Immodium for her dinner. Hell, we're supposed to go up to the Eastern slope of the Sierras on Thursday to spend 5 days hiking and loving the altitude (7000+)...and now we have this to deal with. She has not been exposed to a giardia situation, shoes no signs of parasites, but this thing has been coming on for several days.

I'm not planning on a trip to the vet before we leave, but any suggestions for treatment while we're gone?

I'd be going to the vet also. Immodium has very limited use. Most forms of infectious diarrhea are ill-served by anti-diarrheals. If it's viral it needs to run its course and be supported with fluids, etc... Bacterial and parasitis can be treated with Abx. Immodium slows down colonic and intestinal transit time, and harbors the parasites in the gut longer. Basically, if you have an infectious diarrhea, you need to let the system flush itself out, and make sure you replace the lost fluid. Watery diarrhea can be a sign of a parasite, not sure what you meant by "showing no signs".

I'd get to a vet in any case. Like heat injury, by the time you wait for more and more signs something is wrong, the deeper in the hole you get. The fact you're writing with concerns here is one clue. By the time other signs appear, you may be much farther into dehydration than you care to be, and without easy access to a vet.

A little canned pumpkin and some yogurt might help.

I only let dogs go 1 day with explosive diarrhea. Then its off to the vet.

Could she have eaten something she shouldn't?

if you havent' had rain, and the dog has been in water... incidence of giardia goes up... lots of it in the midwest this time of year... wouldn't leave this go..... no pun intended.

Even if she tests negative for giardia it still could be there. You need a vet and stop the kibble.
