When did it become “The Government is the the problem”?


I just watched the segment with Ken Burns about the National Parks on Morning Joe. (MSNBC 30 September 09) This question and an answer was brought up by Ken Burns.
Knowing the scandals that started in 1980's through today such as Star Wars, Savings and Loan, Guns for Hostages (now called Hold til Inauguration), Sex for Hire/Sex between Flights, Enron, Global Crossing, Halliburton, Blackwater (Xe), AIG, Citi, on and on and on what do you think the problem is?

As I see it, it resides in almost the entire Republican Party since 1980. Mainly the politicians and those voters who choose to keep them in place. The Democrats are not blameless either, there are about 20-30% of the Democratic Politicians who are just as self serving and corrupt. They all pretend to serve their constituents, but funnel our money to the 1/1000% of the Nation they serve and receive an occasional bone for their efforts. God forbid that half deaf, one eyed, one legged grandmother Tilly be given a free crutch from our Government because she receives food stamps and also chews tobacco.

The GOP, with the help of a few Democrats, have turned the Government into a huge CASH COW for the SELECT FEW. Those of us who work to produce all of the goods and services in this Nation should not be held captive by a few who grow Politicians to mine our pockets. Nor should they deny the truly needy among us. And believe me, they should not be laughing on the way to the vault.

The problem began when Politicians became "Career Politicians and the word, "serve" became an alien thought to the career politician.

All of this is fueled by the media where "style" is more important than "substance".

Then there is the "entitlement mentallity" that began with LBJ. This is where the government is responsible for everything and not the citizen. The more we have become a fat, soft minded, apathtic society, the more we get the government we deserve. That being a bunch of political theives that have never done an honest days work!

P S The only way to solve this is to restrict the priviledge to vote. By making it mandatory that citizens have to pass a difficult Civics Test for the priviledge to vote, we can turn the situation around.

The"Boomers" came of age about the time of LBJ. LBJ, like the Boomer's, parents lavished much in material goods on that generation without demanding responsibility in return. Material wealth became more important than sprititual values.

It is interesting that the radical left youth of the time viewed government and businesses as the evil, but nevertheless a source of largess that the "Establishment" should pay for . They have morphed into hard rightists that continues to see government evil, but nevertheless a source of largess that they or no one else should have to pay for.

The thing that amazed me when I went to Ireland, the average Irish blue collar man in local pubs knew more about American politics than the average American voter.

You're not even in the right century. Go back to the 1880's and the birth of a true hero of big government socialists...John Maynard Keynes. A man who agreed with Lenin when he said "there is no subtler, no surer means of overturning the existing basis of society than to debauch the currency". Amen to that!

Or go back to the 1940's when we allowed a democrat President to permanently screw us with the social security act. Soon enough we'll see what happens when this fraudulent program runs out of money. There aint no lock box, Al.

Or how about the 60's with LBJ and his Great Society crap!

Then let's make a stop in 1971 when Dick Nixon abandoned the gold standard with the stoke of a pen and gave us a system of limitless credit creation.

Maybe we should talk about Big Al Greenspan who earlier this decade dropped interest rates so low it allowed the banksters to do what they do best...screw us!

And now we have a President who for over 20 years attended a black liberation theology church and even a cursory study of liberation theology will show that it cannot co-exist with our Constitution. No way. He'll only ramp-up the destruction of this country.

So to answer your question, yea...most of our problems begin and end with big government. But it's waaay late to do anything about it. Every man for himself because...

Your last comment struck a nerve with me too. In training, I met docs from all four corners of the world. Lithuanian, Russian (served Red army during cold war), Sri Lankan, and all varieties of Asian. ALL of them were fascinating to talk politics with, as they did have a deeper understanding of not only politics and economics, but human nature as well. It is clear to me, that with a few exceptions, Americans have lost the art of conversation for the most part. And I don't mean, "Did you see what Oprah said yesterday???" type chat! We spend way too much time letting others think for us. Their idea of debate and conversation was trying to understand what and how the other person was thinking and believing, not trying to ram their beliefs down your throat.

The Lithuanian doc and I became good friends over discussing how the collapse of the Soviet Union was both a blessing and a curse for his family back home. A wonderful yet simple observation he shared with me on coming to America sticks with me to this day. He said he went to the store and needed to get some shampoo for his wife. He was taken aback by the entire row of shampoos.....for dry scalp, for oily hair, for highlights, fresh scent, mountain spring, lavender.....you get the point. In Lithuania, he said, you go to the store, and if you're lucky, there's a bottle on the shelf that says, "SHAMPOO", and you buy it while you can.

My Sri Lankan friend was perplexed and asked my how America got poverty and obesity backwards. When asked to explain, he told me in his country, the rich people are big, and the poor people are very, very thin. Here, the poorest take up the most room on the front steps! He didn't get it. I asked if they have foodstamps in Sri Lanka.

Like your Irish pubster, I gained interesting insight from listening to people from far away.

I think in early society that Tribal Groups worked together in the FOOD... HEALTH... EDUCATION... WARFARE... sequence for survival of their gene pool. In our current society a large group seem to think that CAPITAL GAINS AND WAREFARE are the societal imperatives and anything else is of no consequence, including a divers gene pool.

"Career" politicians have been a major part of our landscape since our founding fathers left their farms and moved to Philadelphia to begin writing the Constitution. Surprisingly (that's sarcasm), laws that require a voting test of some sort (whether based on knowledge, education, or wealth) always seem to end up favoring those in power. And, for what it's worth, one of the great benefits when I left government was that I was able to work "corporate" hours which averaged about 30% less than I worked in government.

Unfortunately, too many people assume that disagreements over policy and direction are a product of ignorance or corruption -- and of course it's always the other side that is ignorant and corrupt. My own experience is that most people are pretty good at figuring out their own self interest, and that most people have a pretty solid sense of fairness. They generally try to balance the two in their voting and in their lives bt disagreements arise because people disagree.

Yes, social security is such a terrible thing! My grandfather, who worked 43 years in the coal mine can now live comfortably in retirement. Damn liberal!
