    Default Stupid Stupid MH's

Was hunting ducks on a small pothole yesterday with a friend and his dog. At first light a flock of mallards cup up and commit. One dead on the water, two other birds hit and down in the brush just past the pothole. We pick up the dead bird, and let the other two sit until the end of prime shooting time. We kill a few more ducks over the course of the next half hour and then it's time to pick up the first two birds we let sit.

I send my MH across the pothole onto this finger of brush and weeds. Duck should be right there. She gets there, hunts it throughly, and proceeds to go deeper, across open water. NOOOO, whistle stop, whistle back in. She goes deep.. NOOOOO, whistle stop, whistle back in.......She goes deep,.... Noooooo, You get the picture.

In frustration, I let her do what she wants to do for a minute or so, while I help my buddy and his dog locate other bird.

Doesn't she come back with the wounded hen mallard from some brush on the far side of the open water with a very smug look on her face. Boy do I feel stupid.

My pup did the same thing with a goose. Stoned it (we thought) and worked in several other groups. When the banging was over I sent him across a canal into some cattails to pick up the first down.

He went hard left and started tracking down the bank. Gave me 3 cast refusals and I finally gave him the sit down, no look at me, 30 seconds to think whistle......

While we were in the staredown I saw something in the water to his left....yep, the crippled goose was doing the periscope down the bank. Dro had sat there and watched him sneak down the bank and into the water. He knew where he was all along......

    Same smug look too....

HAHAHAHAHA! Having trained with you as much as I have-I can hear EVERY word you had to say to her! Glad Faith was able to redeem herself and show you why she's the dog and you're the stup... um-human!

Kate & I were hunting once with a friend & his young dog who couldn't come up with what should have been his bird, so we sent Kate. She hunted & hunted & I was wondering what was up. She ended up scaling up a fallen tree & walking it out to where the bird had landed in the branches! Definitely not where I thought it would be, but she was the one with the nose!

    Happy Huntng Steve!

Always have faith in the dog .After many times going thru what the OP did, I finally stopped micro managing the dog in a hunt. MUCH quicker using the dogs abilities than mine .

I had like situation hunting chuckar. I told her NO bird here she flips me off and tracks and put it up 30 yrds from me. I shoot it down and got the same look you got. From then on I trust my dogs nose better than my brain. LOL
