So my pup is about four months old now and he's progressing beautifully from an obedience and basic retrieving skills perspective. He flies after bumpers and made his first water retrieve last weekend. (He still doesn't care much for water, but his love of retrieving overrides.)
I'm still debating between training him myself with the help of local clubs or sending him to a professional. I don't plan on ever placing him in any field trials or hunt tests. I just want a great hunting dog.
I'm leaning towards a professional only because I know that I have a great ability to procrastinate and not complete what I've started (hence my older English setter who just runs around the woods trying to scare grouse).
I live in Illinois but spend most of my free time in Wisconsin. Does anyone have any good recommendations for trainers in Wisconsin that I could give a call and check out? I figure I wouldn't send him to a trainer until late winter/early spring (~8 months), and I'd like to start doing my homework now so I'm prepared come March.
Thanks for any info -
Erik
