Maniscus tear in 8 month old pup?
I have an 8 mth. old pup with a possible maniscus tear. I have heard two different opions. If it is torn have surgery and another says let it heal itself with time and medication. If you have experienced this what are your thoughts and opinions? thanks
How was this diagnosed??? The only reason I say that is having a primary Meniscal tear in a dog without cruciate pathology is very very rare. Not to mention having an 8mth old with a cruciate tear would be bizzare as well. I am a small animal surgery resident and the advice I would give you would be to see the opinion of a specialist. To diagnose the condition you would need either arthroscoy or an MRI. However, I would rule out other developmental orthopedic diseases in a dog that age such as OCD, MPLs, panosteitis, etc. before I would be convinced of primary meniscal tear in a young dog. Not to say that it could not happen just really rare and hard to diagnose.

i had him out for a run and all the sudden he came up lame. i gave it a couple of days and it didn't get any better so I took him to the vet and she did exam on the leg and there was some clicking and tenderness in the that area. So a specialist has not looked at it. She said it possibly could be torn, but she was not for sure on that. She put him on meds and said keep him low key for two weeks and see how it is after that. If it didn't improve she would recomend a specialist. She said possibly they would do sergury. Another person told me that it could heel on its own. Sergury would cause early arthritis. I just didn't like the thought of cutting into a young dog and having a problem like that so young. thanks for the reply
Its possible just rare. As for it fixing itself. If it is a torn meniscus you can forget that. The meniscus is a poorly vascularized structure and once it is torn it isn't going to heal. Instead it will be a constant source of lameness and discomfort. Surgery will be indicated if that is the problem. As for arthritis..... Likely it has already started if ther is some stifle issue. However, if you can eliminate the problem before it becomes advance and macroscopic then hopefully it will not become an issue until later in life.
