Stunning! With that much money, they could have put solar panels (at $40K per house) on about 2775 homes and saved tons of $ in energy consumption now and in the future.
Too bad most of the solar panels are made in China ... but at least some of the $ would have found its way into the private sector for installation of the panels. Or they could have built a plant to manufacture solar panels?
The tax credits for alternative energy (ground source heat pumps and solar panels) are a joke. With a maximum of $1500 credit, compared to the cost of $25,000, who (except the extremely wealthy) would even bother to explore those truly energy-conserving alternatives?
A neighbor just received a letter from the electric company saying that she is using too much electricity based on comparison with her neighbors. She happens to have electric baseboard heat. A realistic "conversion" for her would run at least $6000 (for an updated heatpump or fossil fuel furnace). The $1500 would barely make a dent in the cost.
