Hunting wild squirrels with .22 around here is right up there with Springtime gobbler hunting. Hunting squirrels with shotguns is frowned upon and not considered sport. One picks a spot and hides waiting for them moving tree top to tree top. I shot that black one at 50 yards and he only gave me a two inch target. He was hiding behind a tree with only his head out. Shot one through the neck while he was sitting on top of a dead gum tree at 40 yards. If anyone thinks it is easy shooting wild squirrels with a .22 they should try it sometimes. They don't sit still very long and if they spot a human, they haul ass.

Like I said, it's better than playing Sniper on xbox.

I use a .17 for that purpose and it works great. Shots are usually 20 to 60 yards. You are right about them being wary little farts. They have a tendency to hiss a fella off.

I did not hunt much with a shotgun as a kid. When I did I used the old 410 and it was by no means my favorite weapon. I used Dad's 22 and he kept it clean for me ( and a supply of 22 longs ). The first squirrel that I ever killed had the top of his head shot off. It's very true that they don't give you much of a target ! I was not a great shot and never any good at quails. I do prefer a target that is not moving which is probably why the dogs and I hunted squirrels more often than anything else. VBG. Shotgun shells cost a lot more than 22 longs We were not rich by far so we used the 22 most often. I think I can safely say that I never shot a whole box of 410 shells all the while that I was growing up. I do love that old 410 and I usually use it to kill snakes anymore. I'm sure it is older than I am .......... I have had to have the firing pin replaced twice since I started using it.

Got my first drake mallard on Saturday and my dog got 3 more retrieves on the season. She ran a blind on the hen with one whistle. Dixie's really coming along and I couldn't be prouder of her. We saw LOTS of ducks (for my area), but most cut the decoys before LST. It was really clear and bright early on...Tomorrow is supposed to be cloudy. Headed out in the AM to try to get a few more...
