The best news person in that group and I think the most objective is Shepard Smith.

Probably because his show is a news show, not commentary like the rest of the group listed.

He's starting to slip his editorial views in more and more. I'm not too crazy about him. (Shep Smith)

How do they arrive at these numbers? I think over the years I have seen most of these people briefly other than O'Reilly whom we watched several years back when he first came on. I found O'Reilly to be average at best & when your go to interviews are Reich & Rangel, it gets old fast. I don't believe we have looked at any of these people in the last 5 years.

In the largest 50 markets, Neilson uses Personal People Meters. This is an electonic device that one wears and records TV viewing and which networks are being viewed. It sends that information to a central data collection bank. Little room for error with PPM's.

In the smaller than top 50 markets, viewers are asked to fillout a diary of what they watched.

The PPM will evetually be available in all sized markets as it is much more reliable with the information as opposed to someone trying to recollect all thier viewing over the past week and then fill out a diary.

Broadcast news on CBS, ABC and NBC still dwarfs the viewing on cable news.

Remember, that cable is only in one-third of the households. Alternative delivery systems (satellite) accounts for the other third. It makes no difference whether folks are viewing cable or satellite as the program being watched is counted. If there are three folks in the room watching, then there should be 3 PPM's next to the TV. The PPM folks issues a transmitter for each person in the household.
