Interesting piece in the NY Times today about how Hyundai & Kia have brought a lot of well-paying jobs to Alabama. By improving the quality of their cars (and catering to high-mileage market), they have created thousands of jobs around Montgomery with their factories & parts suppliers.
No unions in their factories (or in any of the Asian car factories here, the article said). Workers average about $20/hour ... and have been putting in about 10 hrs of overtime/week; they've already added a second shift.
Seems like they've figured out how to create jobs: produce something people want at a price they can afford. What a novel idea!
