I home schooled my son for three years (through middle school).
A day's worth of schooling was done in approx 3 hours.
As a 6th grader (first year I home schooled), he had a 3rd grade reading level and a 4th grade math level.
When he tested to enter HS (I home schooled for 6th, 7th and 8th grades), he tested as a freshman in college for English (reading, comprehension and grammar/spelling etc). He tested as a senior in HS in Math.
After school sports are available to home schooled children (even if they do not attend the school) and then there are always the "summer" activities (baseball etc). Also, home schooled children can usually attend "special" classes at the school like music if you want them too.
