The new NFL
1) Millionaires versus billionaires fighting for more money via possible lockout.
2) Kickoff moved to the 35 to induce more touchbacks, therefore less kickoff excitement (and injuries) and actual football.
3) ALL scoring plays will be automatically reviewed by the replay booth, allowing coaches to save their challenges for other plays.
I think my interest in watching pro football, let alone ever buying tickets or any other merchandise just hit zero.

The NFL is forced to try and protect players from injuries.
Teams have been flooded over the last few years with law suits filed by players with lingering injuries.
If the owners didn't attempt to demostrate that they have the player's welfare in mind, the damages awarded in the future could create financial harships on teams.
Where do we go without great leaders for the defense of our liberties? Who will defend our right to live our lives _as we chose_ without others taking that from us? The answer is, as it should be, no one. We are the defense of our rights and should always remember that. Libertarian blogger

As it has been said many times before get rid of the dome get back to natural grass . No more astro turf and let the game be played like it should outside in the elements.
Then they'll be suing the owners for sniffles and grass stains.

Players do sign injury waivers when they sign thier contracts.
While under contract with a team, they get a Cadillac plan.
When they are gone, their pension and/or disability is covered.
However, where there are lawyers there will always be frivilous law suits and a team owner can't take the chance that the suit will fall into the hands of a activist judge.

Part of any good defense in a court of law is being able to demonstate that the party being sued was aware of the problem and took positive steps to rectify it.
That is exactly what the NFL is doing. They are being proactive in addressing injuries.
